Rubin Collins
Rubin Collins Jr. (born October 19, 1953) is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks. Collins was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 36th overall pick of the 1974 NBA draft but spent his professional career in the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA). High school and college career A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Collins attended Edison High School. He transferred to Washington High School in Princess Anne, Maryland, where he led the team to a 19–0 record during the 1970–71 regular season. Collins was offered scholarships by over 40 colleges. Collins played college basketball for the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks from 1971 to 1974. The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks men's basketball team is the basketball team that represents University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland, United States. History UMES is the only HBCU men's basketball team to have ever been ranked in the men's AP top 25 poll, coming in at number 20 in the 1973–74 season after winning their first 20 games. The school's team currently competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. They have never played in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. 1974 NBA Draft
The 1974 NBA draft was the 28th annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA), and was held on May 28, 1974, before the 1974–75 season. In this draft, 18 NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The first two picks in the draft belonged to the teams that finished last in each conference, with the order determined by a coin flip. The Portland Trail Blazers won the coin flip on March 27 and were awarded the first overall pick, while the Philadelphia 76ers were awarded the second pick. The remaining first-round picks and the subsequent rounds were assigned to teams in reverse order of their win–loss record in the previous season. Mohawk Valley Thunderbirds
The Utica Olympics, known also as Mohawk Valley Thunderbirds, were an American professional basketball team based in Utica, New York that were members of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) from 1978 to 1980. The team was previously known as the Baltimore Metros. The team moved to Utica during the 1978–79 season and were renamed the Mohawk Valley Thunderbirds. The franchise disbanded following the season, but another Utica CBA franchise was created. They were known as the Utica Olympics and finished last place in the CBA following the 1979–1980 season, with a 15–31 record. The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) is an annual men's college basketball tournament operated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Since 2023, all rounds of the tournament are played at various sites across the country which are selected annually. From its founding in 1938 to 2022, the semifinals and finals were always played at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City. Predating the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament by one year, the NIT was considered the most prestigious post-season showcase for college basketball before its status was superseded in the mid-1950s by the NCAA tournament.
