"The Rubberband Man" is a song recorded by American vocal group The Spinners (American group), the Spinners. The song, written by producer Thom Bell and singer-songwriter Linda Creed, originated because of Bell's son Mark, who was being teased by his classmates for being overweight. Intended to improve his son's self-image, the song eventually evolved from being about "The Fat Man" to "The Rubberband Man". The last major hit by the Spinners to feature Philippé Wynne on lead vocals, "The Rubberband Man" spent three weeks at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100, number 3 on the US Cash Box Top 100, ''Cash Box'' Top 100 and topped the Billboard Black Singles, U.S. R&B chart. The Spinners (American Group)
The Spinners are an American rhythm and blues vocal group that formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1954. They enjoyed a string of hit singles and albums during the 1960s and 1970s, particularly with producer Thom Bell. The group continues to tour, without any original members, after Henry Fambrough retired in 2023. The group is also listed as the Detroit Spinners and the Motown Spinners, due to their 1960s recordings with the Motown label. These other names were used in the UK to avoid confusion with a British folk group also called The Spinners (UK band), the Spinners. Eddie Steeples (born November 25, 1973) is an American actor known for his roles as the "Rubberband Man" in an advertising campaign for OfficeMax, Cal in '' Would You Rather'', as Darnell Turner on the NBC sitcom ''My Name Is Earl,'' and Eddie on '' The Guest Book''. Life and career Steeples was born in St. Louis, Missouri, raised in Spring, Texas, and is the oldest of eight children.
