Rozaina Adam
Rozaina Adam (; born 12 December 1976) is a Maldivian politician who was a member of the People's Majlis, who represented the Addu Meedhoo constituency from August 2008 to May 2024. She was the Majority Chief Whip of the Maldivian Parliament as well as the Chair of the Independent Institutions Committee. Additionally, she was a member of the Human Rights and Gender Committee. MP Rozaina was an executive board member of the Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA). She was the chair of PGA's most recent initiative, Parliamentary Rapid Response Team (PARRT). She was also WPL's (Women Political Leaders) ambassador for the Maldives. Rozaina was appointed as the deputy leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group on 2 June 2014 and filled this post until 2 July 2019. People's Majlis
The People's Majlis () is the unicameral legislative body of Maldives. It has the authority to enact, amend and revise laws, as outlined in the Constitution of the Maldives. It is composed of 93 members as of 2024. Each year on the first Monday or Thursday of February, the Majlis is opened by the President of the Maldives. During the opening of ceremony, the president outlines his policies and achievements in his presidential term. The annual state budget is decided here. Its working language is Dhivehi. Etymology '' Majlis'' is the Arabic word for a sitting room. It can also refer to a legislature, and is used in the names of legislative councils and assemblies in some states of the Islamic world. Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) is a non-profit, non-partisan international network of committed legislators, that informs and mobilizes parliamentarians in all regions of the world to advocate for human rights and the rule of law, democracy, human security, non-discrimination, gender equality, and climate justice. PGA Membership is open to individual legislators from elected parliaments. Currently, it consists of approximately 1,200 members in 139 parliaments. PGA was established in 1978 in Washington, D.C., by a group of concerned parliamentarians from around the world to "take collective, coordinated and cohesive actions on global problems, which could not be successfully addressed by any one government or parliament acting alone". 2024 Maldivian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in the Maldives on 21 April 2024, having previously been scheduled for 17 March. The election date was changed to April after President Mohamed Muizzu ratified election postponement bill by the People's Majlis passed on 28 February. Due to Grade 7, 8 and 9 exams scheduled for 16–27 April clashing with the parliamentary election date, the Ministry of Education decided to bring forward the tests to 27 March–25 April. The result was a landslide victory for Muizzu's People's National Congress (PNC) and a heavy defeat for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which won a similar landslide in the 2019 elections. The results were seen as an endorsement of Muizzu's plan to press ahead with closer economic cooperation with China and a rebuke of the pro-India MDP, which had sought to disrupt efforts to realign Maldivian diplomacy. 2019 Maldivian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in the Maldives on 6 April 2019. The result was a landslide victory for the Maldivian Democratic Party, which won 65 of the 87 seats in the People's Majlis. This was the first time in Maldivian history that one party was able to secure a supermajority in parliament. Electoral system The 87 seats in the People's Majlis were elected in single-member constituencies using the first-past-the-post system. 2014 Maldivian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in the Maldives on 22 March 2014. The Progressive Party of Maldives and its allies won 53 seats. Background The elections were held after the controversial presidential elections in which Abdulla Yameen defeated Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldivian Democratic Party. Following the elections the Supreme Court dismissed the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Election Commission for contempt of court. The MDP protested, but did not boycott the parliamentary elections. One the day before the elections Qasim Ibrahim of the Jumhooree Party requested that the Supreme Court to delay the elections due to the Election Commission not having a full complement of members.
