Roy Erasmus
Roy Erasmus is a politician and lawyer from Northwest Territories, Canada. He is a former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Erasmus was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. Erasmus' electoral district was abolished at the end of his first term and he ran for re-election in the new Weledeh electoral district. He was easily defeated by Joe Handley in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election. Following his election loss to Joe Handley, Erasmus worked as a Director for the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs in the Government of the Northwest Territories for 6 years. Yellowknife
Yellowknife (; Dogrib: ) is the capital, largest community, and only city in the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, about south of the Arctic Circle, on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River. Yellowknife and its surrounding water bodies were named after a local Dene tribe, who were known as the "Copper Indians" or "Yellowknife Indians", today incorporated as the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. They traded tools made from copper deposits near the Arctic Coast. Its population, which is ethnically mixed, was 19,569 per the 2016 Canadian Census. Of the eleven official languages of the Northwest Territories, five are spoken in significant numbers in Yellowknife: Dene Suline, Dogrib, South and North Slavey, English, and French. Legislative Assembly Of The Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". Michael Ballantyne
Michael Alan Ballantyne (February 27, 1945 – June 19, 2008) was a Canadian politician and humanitarian. He was a city councillor for Yellowknife City Council from 1978 and in 1979 became mayor until his resignation in 1983. He served as a Member and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1983 to 1995. Ballantyne was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1983 Northwest Territories general election, winning the Yellowknife North electoral district. He was re-elected to a second term in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election. He was re-elected to his third and final term in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. Ballantyne was elected Speaker of the Assembly on November 13, 1991 and served in that position until November 10, 1993. He retired at the end of his term when the Legislature dissolved in 1995. Joe Handley
Joseph "Joe" L. Handley, MLA (born August 9, 1943), is a former teacher, politician and civil servant and was the tenth premier of the Northwest Territories. Early life Handley was born in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan in 1943. Prior to moving to the Northwest Territories in 1985, he worked as an educator. Handley joined the Northwest Territories government and served as Deputy Minister in a wide number of portfolios including Deputy Minister of Education, Deputy Minister for the Departments of Renewable Resources, the NWT Housing Corporation, Transportation and Resources, Wildlife, and Economic Development. He left his career as a Deputy Minister to run for election in 1999. 1999 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1999 Northwest Territories general election was held on December 6, 1999. This was the first election under the new boundaries that were created when Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. 19 members were elected, five fewer than in the previous election. The main issues in this election were Native self-government and control over the territory's resources. On polling day, Yellowknife was caught in an extreme blizzard that cut off-road traffic and supplies. This was also the last election in Canada in the 20th century. The election was conducted under a non-partisan rules as the government operates under consensus, and Elections N.W.T. has not recognized parties since 1905.
