Rotterdam School
The term Rotterdam School is used to refer to a group of composers related to the city of Rotterdam. What started in the final decade of the twentieth century within a small circle of composition students at the Rotterdam Conservatory with a manifesto by Rotterdam composer Oscar van Dillen, has been taken more seriously now in larger musical circles. Many Rotterdam composers have made successful careers in contemporary or theatre music. It is impossible to accommodate all Rotterdam composers together in one kind of style or musical æsthetic. Therefore, one could not really speak of a school in the traditional meaning of the word. The colloquium (called "practicums") at the Rotterdam Conservatoire, led by composition teachers Peter-Jan Wagemans and Klaas de Vries, played an important, unifying role. Composers
A composer is a person who writes music. The term is especially used to indicate composers of Western classical music, or those who are composers by occupation. Many composers are, or were, also skilled performers of music. Etymology and Definition The term is descended from Latin, ''compōnō''; literally "one who puts together". The earliest use of the term in a musical context given by the ''Oxford English Dictionary'' is from Thomas Morley's 1597 ''A Plain and Easy Introduction to Practical Music'', where he says "Some wil be good descanters ..and yet wil be but bad composers". 'Composer' is a loose term that generally refers to any person who writes music. Evrim Demirel
Evrim Demirel (born November 17, 1977) is a Turkish composer and jazz pianist. Evrim Demirel was educated in Izmir High School of Fine Arts and he studied piano with Nergis Sakirzade. Then he enrolled at Bilkent University in Ankara becoming a student in the Theory-Composition Department of the Music and Performing Arts Faculty. He earned his B.A. from this institution studying composition with Elhan Bakihanov, and went to the Netherlands for further music studies in Rotterdam Conservatory. He studied jazz piano under Rob van Kreeveld, electronic music under Rene Uijlenhoet and composition under Klaas de Vries and graduated from the composition and jazz- piano departments in 2005. Afterwards he has studied composition with Theo Loevendie in Amsterdam Conservatory and obtained his master's degree in 2007. Siemon Edward Top (born 1 January 1972 in Ommen) is a Dutch composer. Top studied violin and composition with Peter-Jan Wagemans at the Rotterdam Conservatoire. He won the Dutch prize for composition in 1999. He also studied composition with Klaas de Vries. After his graduation he studied music theory and analysis at King's College London. Joey Roukens
Joey Roukens (born in Schiedam, 28 March 1982) is a Dutch composer of contemporary classical music. Roukens studied composition with Klaas de Vries at the Rotterdam Conservatoire and psychology at Leiden University. Roukens also studied piano privately with Ton Hartsuiker. Florian Magnus Maier (born 1973), also known as Morean, is a German classical composer, guitarist, producer and vocalist of the bands Alkaloid, Dark Fortress, and Noneuclid.
