Rossy (musician)
Paul Bert Rahasimanana (born 20 September 1960), better known as Rossy, is a Malagasy singer and songwriter, generally considered the most popular Malagasy artist of the 1990s. Beginning his musical career as an accordionist and singer within a traditional ''hira gasy'' musical troupe, Rossy innovated a fusion of hira gasy instrumentation and vocal style with contemporary rock, funk and folk sounds to create a uniquely Malagasy genre of contemporary popular music. Rossy actively promoted former president Didier Ratsiraka through concert performances throughout his presidency and served within the Ministry of Culture to promote artists' rights and copyright law. When Ratsiraka fell into disfavor following the contentious Malagasy presidential election, 2001, 2001 Malagasy presidential elections, Rossy went into self-imposed exile in France. Andry Rajoelina
Andry Nirina Rajoelina (, ; born 30 May 1974) is a Malagasy-French politician and businessman who has served as president of Madagascar since 2019. He was previously president of a provisional government from 2009 to 2014 following a political crisis and military-backed coup, having held the office of Mayor of Antananarivo for one year prior. Before entering the political arena, Rajoelina was involved in the private sector, including a printing and advertising company called Injet in 1999 and the ''Viva'' radio and television networks in 2007. He formed the political party Young Malagasies Determined and was elected Mayor of Antananarivo in 2007. While in this position, he led an opposition movement against then-President Marc Ravalomanana that culminated in a 2009 political crisis. 2024 Malagasy Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Madagascar on 29 May 2024 to elect the 163 members of the National Assembly. The election took place a few months after Andry Rajoelina was re-elected in the November 2023 presidential elections, which were marked by low turnout and an opposition boycott. According to preliminary results, the coalition initially lost its majority. Mahamasina Stadium
Kianja Barea Mahamasina is a rugby union and football ( multi-purpose) stadium, also used for concerts and athletics, in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Usage It is used mostly for rugby and football matches. The stadium has a 40,880 capacity for football and rugby matches. Incidents In 2005, the stadium was the site of a stampede that killed two people during a match between South African side Kaizer Chiefs and Madagascar's USJF Ravinala. Ramilison Besigara (Ramilison "Mr. Many-Cigarettes"), also known as Dadamily Besigara, was a Malagasy '' hiragasy'' troupe leader from Fenoarivo in the central highlands of Madagascar. Mahaleo
Mahaleo is a folk-pop band from Madagascar that is widely viewed as the most popular Malagasy group of all time. The band was founded by Dama (Rasolofondraosolo Zafimahaleo) with six of his classmates after first performing together during the ''rotaka'' student protests at their high school on 13 May 1972. Mahaleo's lyrics draw upon the indirect language of traditional ''hainteny'' and ''ohabolana'' (Malagasy poetry and proverbs) to expose contemporary political and social issues and invite listeners to identify their own solutions. Marovany
The marovany (formerly spelled marouvane) is a suitcase shaped, wooden, type of box zither from Madagascar, used in Malagasy music. It is strung on both sides with metal strings. The player plucks the strings with both hands, often with rapid alternation. This often creates complex rhythmic patterns, typical of Malagasy music. It is tuned in sequences of thirds. The instrument is commonly used in rituals and spiritual gatherings. Cultural significance The marovany and other instruments are used by Madagascar musical troupes at reburial ceremonies, where the music is believed to help a medium better enter a trance state during rituals which will only be successful if the correct type of music is being played. Valiha
The valiha is a tube zither from Madagascar made from a species of Valiha diffusa, local bamboo; it is considered the "List of national instruments (music), national instrument" of Madagascar. The term is also used to describe a number of related zithers of differing shapes and materials. The instrument has been held in high regard among the Malagasy particularly in the Merina Kingdom, Merina rule over the island that having long fingernails ideal for plucking its strings were marks "distinguishing the aristocracy from the labourers". Aside from recreational music, the valiha is also used for ritual music to summon spirits. The kabosy is a box-shaped wooden guitar commonly played in music of Madagascar. It has four to six strings and is commonly thought to be a direct descendant of the Arabic oud through the '' gambus'' played in Malay-populated areas of Southeast Asia.
