''Rossland'' was a sternwheel Steamship, steamboat that ran on the Arrow Lakes in British Columbia. The vessel was named after Rossland, British Columbia, once a prosperous mining town in the region. Design and construction ''Rossland'' was the third steamboat built by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) for its steamboat lines running in the lakes of the Kootenays. She was designed by the superintendent of the CPR's Lake Service, the accomplished steamboat man James W. Troup (steamboat captain), James W. Ceremonial ship launching involves the performing of ceremonies associated with the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a nautical tradition in many cultures, dating back millennia, to accompany the physical process with ceremonies which have been observed as public celebration and a solemn blessing, usually but not always, in association with the launch itself. The history of British Columbia covers the period from the arrival of Paleo-Indians thousands of years ago to the present day. Prior to European colonization, the lands encompassing present-day British Columbia were inhabited for millennia by a number of First Nations. Several European expeditions to the region were undertaken in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Needles is an unincorporated locality on the west shore of Lower Arrow Lake in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The western terminal for the Needles Ferry to Fauquier, the landing on Highway 6 is east of Lumby, and southwest of Nakusp. Name origin The landing was formerly known as The Needles from the long thin sand spits that stretched out into the lake, but Needles became more widely accepted after 1906. The former remained the official name of the narrows. Former settlement Needles was an area of fruit trees and scrub farming, with the ferry operating since 1913.
