Waylon Jennings
Waylon Jennings (June 15, 1937 – February 13, 2002) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. He pioneered the Outlaw Movement in country music. Jennings started playing guitar at the age of eight and performed at age fourteen on KVOW radio, after which he formed his first band, The Texas Longhorns. Jennings left high school at age sixteen, determined to become a musician, and worked as a performer and DJ on KVOW, KDAV, KYTI, KLLL, in Coolidge, Arizona, and Phoenix. In 1958, Buddy Holly arranged Jennings's first recording session, and hired him to play bass. Jennings gave up his seat on the ill-fated flight in 1959 that crashed and killed Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens. Jennings then formed a rockabilly club band, The Waylors, which became the house band at "JD's", a club in Scottsdale, Arizona. ''Hangin' Tough'' is a studio album by American country music artist Waylon Jennings, released on MCA Records in 1987. Recording and composition Jennings, who fought RCA and the Nashville system tooth and nail to gain control over his music in the early seventies, actively sought out Music Row's most commercial songwriters for ''Hangin' Tough'', which was produced by Jennings and Jimmy Bowen. Like his previous album ''Will the Wolf Survive'', it displays a slicker sound typical of the records coming out of Nashville in the mid-1980s, utilizing synthesizers and digital recording, but Jennings vocal style on the LP, which AllMusic describes as "stout and unflappable," carries off the songs with conviction. MCA Records was an American record label owned by MCA Inc., which later became part of Universal Music Group. Pre-history MCA Inc., a powerful talent agency and a television production company, entered the recorded music business in 1962 with the purchase of the New York-based US Decca Records (established in 1934), including Coral Records and Brunswick Records. MCA was forced to exit the talent agency business in order to complete the merger. Stewart Hamill Harris is an American country music songwriter. Active since the late 1970s, he has had four compositions which have reached number one on the ''Billboard'' Hot Country Songs chart. Biography and career Harris was born in Birmingham, Alabama but raised in South Carolina, where he performed as a folk music singer. He then moved to New York City and Washington, D.C. before meeting Harry Warner, president of Jerry Reed's publishing company, Vector Music. Through this connection he moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1975 and began writing and touring with Reed. Harris also issued one album, ''Sing Me a Rainbow'', on Mercury Records in 1977. Harris also wrote "A Player, a Pawn, a Hero, a King", which was recorded by Tammy Wynette for the 1978 movie '' Hooper''; this song's success led to further success in film and television soundtrack composition, including the theme song for ''America's Funniest Home Videos''. James Albert Bowen (born November 30, 1937) is an American record producer and former rockabilly singer. Bowen brought Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood together, and introduced Sinatra to Mel Tillis for their album, ''Mel & Nancy.'' Early life Bowen was born in Santa Rita, New Mexico, United States. His family moved to Dumas, Texas, when he was eight years old. Singing career Bowen began as a teenage recording star in 1957 with " I'm Stickin' with You". The song started as the flip side of the hit record " Party Doll" by Buddy Knox (written by Knox and Bowen), but ultimately hit the charts on its own, peaking at No. 14 on ''Billboards Hot 100 chart. Bowen's version sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold record.
