Roscoe is an unincorporated community in Coweta County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. The center of the community is located in the area of the intersection of Georgia State Route 70 (Roscoe Rd) with Hood Rd, Sewell Mill Rd, and Oliver Potts Rd near the local convenient store. History A post office called Roscoe was established in 1882, and remained in operation until 1904. Coweta County, Georgia
Coweta County is a county located in the west central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. It is part of Metro Atlanta. As of the 2020 census, the population was 146,158. The county seat is Newnan. Coweta County is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The land for Lee, Muscogee, Troup, Coweta and Carroll counties was ceded by the Creek people in the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs. The counties' boundaries were created by the Georgia General Assembly on June 9, 1826, but they were not named until December 14, 1826. State Route 70 (SR 70) is a state highway that travels southwest-to-northeast through portions of Coweta and Fulton counties in the north-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects Newnan with the west-central part of Atlanta. Route description Coweta County SR 70 begins at an intersection with US 29/ SR 14 in the northwestern part of Newnan in the central part of Coweta County. Roscoe Conkling
Roscoe Conkling (October 30, 1829April 18, 1888) was an American lawyer and Republican politician who represented New York in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. He is remembered today as the leader of the Republican Stalwart faction and a dominant figure in the Senate during the 1870s. Conkling, who was temperate and detested tobacco, was known for his physical condition, maintained through regular exercise and boxing, an unusual devotion for his time. While in the U.S. House, Conkling served as bodyguard for abolitionist Representative Thaddeus Stevens and fully supported the Union during the American Civil War. Conkling was elevated to the Senate in 1867 as a leading Radical Republican supporter of equal rights for freed Black Americans. Roscoe–Dunaway Gardens Historic District
The Roscoe–Dunaway Gardens Historic District is a rock and floral garden located south of the historic town of Roscoe in Coweta County, Georgia, and the adjacent Dunaway Gardens. Part of the district is located in Fulton County. Seventy-nine buildings and two other structures contribute to the historic district. History The land that became the gardens belonged to the family of Wayne Pendleton Sewell. Sewell was an actor and booking agent and he married the successful actress, Hetty Jane Dunaway, in 1916. Her husband wanted to return to his family's land and Dunaway had not been keen. It was said that she was told that she could do anything at the property she wanted. Hetty Jane Dunaway spent eighteen years overseeing construction of Dunaway Gardens, a "theater-garden" on her husband's family's former plantation in rural Georgia.
