Rooftop Records
Rooftop Records was a Christian music record label, founded in 1982 by the Highway Missionary Society, the parent organization of the band Servant (band), Servant, and distributed by Benson Records. The label was formed to gain greater creative control for the band, as well as a vehicle to promote artists they believed in. Due to the financial stress of supporting Servant's "Great American Album Giveaway" tour, Benson dissolved the relationship, bringing an early end to the nascent label. Jim Palosaari
James Michael Palosaari (January 12, 1939 – May 25, 2011) was an American evangelism, evangelist and performer, one of the leaders in the Jesus Movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. Early life Palosaari was a first-generation American whose Finland, Finnish father emigrated through Ellis Island, New York. Born to John Palosaari (1901–1985) and Sara (née Leveck, 1905–1982) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, he grew up on a goat farm near Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, where he attended Oconomowoc High School. Jesus Movement Palosaari became a Christians, Christian in Seattle, Washington during the Jesus Movement of the late 1960s. Trained in the faith by Linda Meissner, Palosaari and his wife Sue helped to form the nucleus of the Jesus People Army, establishing outposts in Yakima and Spokane, Washington; Boise, Idaho; and Vancouver, B.C. with Russell Griggs. ''World of Sand'' is the third album by Servant, released in 1982 on Rooftop Records. ''World of Sand'' was the debut album for Rooftop Records, the new media arm of the Highway Missionary Society (the band's parent organization). The title comes from a line in the last song:Stylistically, this album would mark the beginning of a move away from the blues rock/classic rock style of their first two albums, toward the synth-infused new wave styles that would mark their latter works. Background The process of creating this album was tragically overshadowed by a devastating accident the summer before: In the aftermath of their loss, the band members were able to find some catharsis by channeling their grief into the creation of the 8-minute epic, "Sudden Death". Middle of the road (also known by its acronym MOR) is a commercial radio format. Music associated with this term is strongly melodic and uses techniques of vocal harmony and light orchestral arrangements. The format was similar to soft adult contemporary. In the mid-late 2000s the term "middle of the road" became used by journalists as a way to describe musicians and bands such as Train and Westlife who calibrated their musical appeal to commercial, popular music taste and avoided more innovative material. Ray Cappo, also known as Raghunath Das, is an American punk rock musician best known as the vocalist for the bands Youth of Today and Shelter (band), Shelter and as founder of the independent record label, independent record labels Revelation Records and Equal Vision Records. Originally from Connecticut, Cappo played drums for the band Violent Children. Before moving to New York City in the 1980s, Youth of Today had already made an impact on the straight edge hardcore punk scene. Career Earlier career Cappo was occasionally a guest Disc jockey, DJ for college radio station WXCI, in Danbury, Connecticut, on a radio show called "The Adventure Jukebox" hosted by Darryl Ohrt of the band No Milk on Tuesday. Shelter (band)
Shelter is an American Hare Krishna hardcore punk band formed by Youth of Today vocalist Ray Cappo in 1991. Because of the religious Hindu-oriented messages in its lyrics, Shelter's subgenre has been dubbed by some as Krishnacore. History In 2001, Shelter released the album ''The Purpose, The Passion''. In 2002, with a new drummer and new guitarist, the band toured Europe and the eastern United States in support of the record, before going on extended hiatus. In 2005, vocalist Ray Cappo recorded an album titled ''Eternal'', with ten new songs and a remake of the track "In Defense of Reality". The album was released in May 2006 by Good Life Recordings. Cappo also did a European tour with a few Dutch hardcore musicians functioning as his touring band. Benson Records was founded by Bob Benson and John T. Benson, who formed the John T. Benson Music Publishing Company in 1902. The record label started out as Heart Warming Records, creating house labels such as Impact Records, Greentree Records, RiverSong, StarSong, Power Discs and Home Sweet Home. In the 1970s, Impact became the top label with artists such as New Dawn, the Imperials, J.D.
