Ronnie Bass
Ronald Edwin "Sunshine" Bass (born October 28, 1955) is a former American football player who played at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and the University of South Carolina. He was portrayed by actor Kip Pardue in the 2000 film ''Remember the Titans'' which is about his high school’s 1971 State Championship team, on which he was the starting quarterback. Early life Bass was born in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, in October 1955, the son of Williamson G. "Bill" Bass and Betty Jean McCauley. Bass' father was an Officer (armed forces), officer in the United States Air Force. Due to his father's military career, Bass and his family moved frequently as he was growing up. The family lived in Smackover, Arkansas, Stillwater, Oklahoma, Huntington Beach, California, and finally Alexandria, Virginia. The 1977 South Carolina Gamecocks football team represented the University of South Carolina as an independent during the 1977 NCAA Division I football season. Led by third-year head coach Jim Carlen, the Gamecocks compiled a record of 5–7. The team played its home games at Williams–Brice Stadium. South Carolina almost made a 24-point comeback against archrival No. 15 Clemson at home, but ultimately lost after Tigers wide receiver Jerry Butler made "The Catch" to retake the lead with twenty seconds left in the game. ESPN would later rank this as the 112th greatest college football game of all time, the only time South Carolina appeared on the list. The 1976 South Carolina Gamecocks football team represented the University of South Carolina as an independent during the 1976 NCAA Division I football season. Led by second-year head coach Jim Carlen, the Gamecocks compiled a record of 6–5. The team played its home games at Williams–Brice Stadium. After an upset over No. 16 Ole Miss, South Carolina was ranked No. 19 in the country, the program's highest ranking since 1971. It was also the first time the Gamecocks had been ranked in the top twenty in two consecutive seasons since 1959. Led by Paul Dietzel, in his ninth and final season as head coach, the Gamecocks compiled a record of 4–7. The team played home games at Williams–Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. Following an 0–2 start, Dietzel announced he would be resigning as head coach at the end of the season, but stated his wishes to remain as athletic director. Dietzel finished his tenure at South Carolina with a 42–53–1 record.
