Ron Davis (pitcher)
Ronald Gene Davis (born August 6, 1955) is an American former Major League Baseball pitcher who played 11 years from 1978 to 1988. Davis played for the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins of the American League and the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants of the National League. He was selected to the American League All-Star team in 1981. Life and career Davis was born in Houston, Texas. Standing 6' 4", he was a hard-throwing right-handed relief pitcher. During his career he appeared in 481 games all in relief, and recorded 130 saves. Originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs, he was traded while still in the minor leagues to the New York Yankees in 1978. While in New York he was used as the team's closer after an injury to All-Star relief pitcher Rich Gossage from a fight with teammate Cliff Johnson. Roy Frederick Smalley III (born October 25, 1952) is an American former professional baseball shortstop who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1975 through 1987 for the Texas Rangers (1975–76), Minnesota Twins (1976–82; 1985–87), New York Yankees (1982–84), and Chicago White Sox (1984). Smalley was a switch-hitter and threw right-handed. His father, Roy Jr., was also an MLB league shortstop, and his uncle, Gene Mauch, was a long-time MLB manager and infielder. Paul Boris
Paul Stanley Boris (born December 13, 1955) is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher. He played for the Minnesota Twins in 1982. Career Borris was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1978. He played his first professional season with their Class A Fort Lauderdale Yankees that year. After spending the 1979 season at Class A Fort Lauderdale, he was promoted to the Double-A Nashville Sounds in 1980. He reached Triple-A with the Columbus Clippers in 1981. Borris was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 1981 Rule 5 draft. He was subsequently returned to New York but then traded back to Minnesota with Ron Davis and Greg Gagne in exchange for Roy Smalley III on April 10, 1982. Gregory Carpenter Gagne (; born November 12, 1961) is an American former shortstop in Major League Baseball. He played 10 seasons for the Minnesota Twins from 1983 to 1992, including both of the Twins' World Series championship teams in 1987 and 1991. He was considered one of the American League's best defensive shortstops during his time with Minnesota. 1981 Major League Baseball Strike
The 1981 Major League Baseball strike was the first work stoppage in Major League Baseball since the 1972 Major League Baseball strike that resulted in regular season games being cancelled. Overall, it was the fourth work stoppage since 1972, but actions in 1973, 1976, and 1980 did not result in any regular season games being cancelled. The strike began on June 12 and forced the cancellation of 712 games (or nearly 34 percent of the Major League schedule) in the middle of the regular season. The two sides reached an agreement on July 31, and play resumed on August 9 with the All-Star Game, with regular season play resuming one day later.
