Ron Barkwell
Ron Barkwell (born December 14, 1946) is a former ice hockey centre who was drafted 1st (9th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings, but never played in the National Hockey League. Playing career Barkwell starting play in his hometown of Moose Jaw with the Moose Jaw Canucks of the TBJHL. He was soon moved to the Flin Flon Bombers of the MJHL where he was a proficient at both centre and right wing. The Detroit Red Wings took a gamble by selecting Barkwell with their first pick in the 1967 NHL Entry Draft. The Wings hoped that Barkwell would continue to develop and become an active member of the organization. However, Barkwell would never play in the NHL. He joined the Johnstown Jets of the Eastern Hockey League in 1967 and only put up 8 points in 21 games. The following season he joined the Port Huron Flags of the International Hockey League and only put up 3 points in 18 games. The centre (or center in the United States) in ice hockey is a forward position of a player whose primary zone of play is the middle of the ice, away from the sideboards. Centres have more flexibility in their positioning and therefore often end up covering more ice surface than any other player. Centres are ideally strong, fast skaters who are able to back-check quickly from deep in the opposing zone. Generally, centres are expected to be gifted passers more so than goal scorers, although there are exceptions - typically larger centres who position themselves directly in front of the net in order to score off rebounds. Winger, in the game of ice hockey, is a forward position of a player whose primary zone of play is along the outer playing areas. They typically flank the centre forward. Originally the name was given to forward players who went up and down the sides of the rink. Wingers generally have the least defensive responsibilities out of any position on the ice, however they are still tasked with defensive duties such as forechecking duties or covering the point in the defensive zone. Nowadays, there are different types of wingers in the game — out-and-out goal scorers, checkers who disrupt the opponents, and forwards who work along the boards and in the corners. Steve Andrascik
Steven George Andrascik (born November 6, 1948) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey right winger. He played one game in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Rangers during the 1972 Stanley Cup playoffs, and 97 games in the World Hockey Association with the Indianapolis Racers, Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades, and Cincinnati Stingers from 1974 to 1976. Playing career Andrascik was born in Sherridon, Manitoba. He was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the 1968 NHL Amateur Draft in the first round, eleventh overall. On November 1, 1970, the Red Wings traded Andrascik to the New York Rangers for Don Luce. Steve Atkinson
Steven John Atkinson (October 16, 1948 – May 6, 2003) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played the positions of centre and right wing. He played in both the National Hockey League and World Hockey Association from 1969 to 1976. Early life Atkinson was born in Toronto, Ontario, but grew up in Barrie, Ontario. Guided by Hap Emms in Barrie, Emms would bring Atkinson along with him when he moved the Flyers from Barrie to Niagara Falls. On April 26, 1968, he scored the winning goal in Game 8 to eliminate the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL Championship Series on the way to a Flyers Memorial Cup title. Atkinson had 19 goals in 29 playoff games that year. Career Originally drafted in 1966 by the Boston Bruins, after the Bruins acquired the pick from the Detroit Red Wings in February 1966. Western International Hockey League
The Western International Hockey League (WIHL) was a senior level ice hockey league that featured teams from the Western United States and Western Canada. It operated from 1946–62 and 1963–88. It grew out of the West Kootenay League, which operated in southeast British Columbia from the 1920s.
