Romulus And The Sabines (1945 Film)
''Romulus and the Sabines'' (Italian: ''Il ratto delle sabine'') is a 1945 Italian comedy film directed by Mario Bonnard and starring Totò, Carlo Campanini, and Clelia Matania. It was one of several of Totò's postwar comedies to use elements of neorealism.Brizio-Skov p.115 The film is based on the German comedy '' Der Raub der Sabinerinnen'' (1884) by Franz von Schönthan and Paul von Schönthan. Plot summary Toto is the actor of a penniless theater group: they arrive in a small town to offer their theatrical calendar to the mayor. Meanwhile, a professor: caught but shy, presents to the community his play, "The Rape of the Sabine Women", but the provincial inhabitants hate mortally the theater. The professor is in despair, but Toto willingly accepts the part of the work, just to eat something. Mario Bonnard
Mario Bonnard (24 December 1889 – 22 March 1965) was an Italian actor and film director. Career Bonnard was born and died in Rome. He began his cinematic career as an actor becoming a popular romantic lead in numerous silent films made before World War I. In 1917, he ventured into film directing for the first time. Before the arrival of sound films he worked for a period in Germany in films directed by Luis Trenker. Back in Italy in 1932, he became a prolific director working with the major stars of the time as: Assia Noris, Elsa Merlini, Amedeo Nazzari, and Luisa Ferida. ''Il feroce Saladino'' (1937) was the most popular of his films of the 1930s. During the war he continued to work. Laura Gore
Laura Gore (born Laura Emilia Regli; 30 September 1918 – 27 March 1957) was an Italian actress and voice actress. She appeared in 39 films between 1945 and 1955. While studying accounting, in 1940 she won the eighth edition of the amateur song contest "L'ora del dilettante" organized by EIAR at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. After that win, Gore immediately started a successful career first as a music hall artist, later as an actress of cinema, radio and theatre. For two consecutive seasons (1949–50 and 1950–51) she was a member of the stage company of Eduardo De Filippo. She was also active as a dubber in the dubbing company ORI. Gore died of a heart attack at 38 years old. She was married to army officer Agostino Golzi.
