Romeo Espino
Romeo C. Espino (December 20, 1914 - February 17, 2003) was a Filipino general who served as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from 1972 to 1980. Early life and education Espino was born on December 20, 1914, and was a native of Samal, Bataan. He finished his college education at the University of the Philippines in 1937. Career Espino joined the Philippine Army in 1941 as a Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) officer and fought against the Japanese during their occupation of the Philippines in World War II. He served as Commanding General of the Philippine Army from January 13, 1967, until May 29, 1968. On January 15, 1972, then President Ferdinand Marcos appointed him as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines succeeding Manuel Yan. The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (CSAFP) is the highest-ranking military officer (except for the President of the Philippines, who holds the position of Commander-in-Chief equivalent to a five-star general) and the head of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), including all service branches (Army, Air Force, Navy– Marine Corps) under its command. Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) is one of three components of the National Service Training Program (NSTP), the civic education and defense preparedness program for higher and vocational education students in the Philippines. Bernabe Buscayno, also called Kumander Dante, is the founder of the New People's Army, the military wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Early life Bernabe Buscayno was one of eight children born to impoverished tenant farmers under a local landlord named Jose Ramos in Sitio Mangga, Talimundoc, Capas, Tarlac. In the late 1960s, after Buscayno's mother died of tuberculosis and his seven-year-old sister died of meningitis, his father, unable to support his remaining children, put them up for adoption. Ramos, the landlord, became the patron to the Buscayno family and "when Bernabe was old enough to begin his schooling, he and his brother Jose were sent to the landowner’s house in Quezon City." The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF; ) is a political organization in the Philippines that was founded in 1972. It started as a splinter group of the Muslim Independence Movement. The MNLF was the organization most active in the Moro conflict for about two decades beginning from the 1970s. In 1996, the MNLF signed a landmark peace agreement with the Philippine government under the administration of President Fidel Ramos that saw the creation of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), an area composed of two mainland provinces and three island provinces in which the predominantly Muslim population enjoys a degree of self-rule. The New People's Army (; abbreviated NPA or BHB) is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).
