Romeo Anaya
Romeo Anaya (5 April 1946 – 24 December 2015) was a Mexican professional boxer who competed from 1967 to 1980, holding the Lineal and WBA bantamweight titles from 1973 to 1974. Professional career Anaya won the Mexico bantamweight title in 1971. He became the world bantamweight champion when he defeated Lineal and WBA bantamweight champion Enrique Pinder of Panama on January 20, 1973. On November 3, 1973, Anaya met Arnold Taylor in a match refereed by Stanley Christodoulou in Johannesburg. The 14 round fight is considered by many to be one of boxing's classic fights. One South African sportswriter called it "the bloodiest fight in South African boxing history". Taylor suffered a cut and was knocked down once in round five and three times in round eight (the WBA has since adopted a rule where a fighter is automatically declared a knockout loser if he or she is knocked down three times in the same round). San Antonio Municipal Auditorium
The San Antonio Municipal Auditorium was a building located at 100 Auditorium Circle, San Antonio, Texas. It was built as a memorial to American soldiers killed in World War I. The San Antonio Municipal Auditorium was also used as a concert venue. In 2009, most of the Municipal Auditorium was razed, and construction on the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts began on the same site. The Tobin opened in 2014. Portions of the exterior of the old auditorium had been preserved and were incorporated into the new structure. Construction The limestone arena was built in 1926 and designed in Spanish Colonial Revival style by Atlee Ayres, his son Robert M. Ayres, and their associates George Willis and Emmett Jackson. Mike Ayala (born January 19, 1958) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1975 to 1991. He is the former NABF super bantamweight and NABF featherweight champion. Amateur career Ayala won the 1973 National Golden Gloves flyweight championship and the 1974 National AAU bantamweight championship. Professional career Championship bouts On June 17, 1979, at San Antonio, Ayala and Danny Lopez fought what boxing book ''The Ring: Boxing in the 20th Century'' called one of the best fights of that year. Lopez retained the title with a 15th-round knockout, but the fight was marred by the finding afterwards that Ayala had been fighting under the influence of drugs. Nevertheless, this did not affect the fight's result, but left many to speculate about how the fight would have ended had Ayala not been drugged during it. The Grand Olympic Auditorium is a former sports venue in southern Downtown Los Angeles, California. The venue was built in 1924 at 1801 South Grand Avenue, now just south of the Santa Monica Freeway.
