Romani people in Germany are estimated at around 170,000–300,000, constituting around 0.2–0.4% of the German population. One-third of Germany's Romani belong to the Sinti group. Most speak German or Sinte Romani. History Origins The Romani people originate from the Northern India, presumably from the northwestern Indian states Rajasthan and Punjab. Linguistic studies have argued that roots of Romani languages lie in India: the languages have grammatical characteristics of Indian languages and share with them a part of the basic lexicon, for example, body parts or daily routines. Arlije
The sedentary Arlije are the main group of the Romani people in North Macedonia, and the majority live in Šuto Orizari Municipality. They are Muslim Romani. There are various subgroups of the Arlije, named after their traditional occupations, living in North Macedonia, Kosovo, Southern Serbia, and Montenegro. Beside Macedonian and Albanian, they speak the Arli dialect of Balkan Romani. The word Arlije (singular Arli) is derived from the Turkish word '' yerli'' (meaning "native" or "settled"), as does the name Erlides (, of a similar group living in Greece, and the Sofia-Erli in Bulgaria. Xoraxane
Xoraxane (also spelled as Khorakhane, Khorakhanè, Horahane, Kharokane, Xoraxai, etc.) is a historical umbrella term to refer to the Muslim Romani population in the Balkans, and those that have dispersed to other parts of Europe. Muslim Romani people or Muslim Roma are people who are ethnically Romani and profess Islam. Gitanos
The Romani in Spain, generally known by the Endonym and exonym, endonym ''Calé'', or the Endonym and exonym, exonym (), belong to the Romani people#Romani subgroups, Iberian Romani subgroup known as Calé, with smaller populations in Portugal (known as ) and in Southern France (known as ). Their sense of identity and cohesion stems from their shared value system, expressed among as ('Gypsy laws'). Wallachian Roma
Wallachian Roma or Vlax Roma is the generic term for various Romani groups in Southeastern Europe who speak one of the Vlax Romani dialects. Many migrated from present-day Romania (Wallachia) to the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries to escape slavery. The Vlax Roma claim to retain Romani culture, language, and social structure despite discrimination they have faced. In Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic (where they are known as ''Vlašika'' or ''Olaši''), they migrated from Romania as part of the Kalderash migration wave and are subdivided into the Lovara and other groups. Kalderash
The Kalderash are a subgroup of the Romani people. They were traditionally coppersmiths and metal workers and speak a number of Romani dialects grouped together under the term Kalderash Romani, a sub-group of Vlax Romani. The Kalderash of the Balkans and Central Europe, in addition to the Gitanos and Manouche/Sinti, are seen as one of the three main confederations () of Romani people in Europe by certain ethnographers.
