Roman Catholic Diocese Of Udupi
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Udupi () is a diocese located in the Kallianpur town of Udupi District of Karnataka, India. It was announced by Pope Benedict XVI on 16 July 2012. It comprises the six civil talukas Udupi, Bramavara, Karkala, Kapu, Kundapura and Byndoor and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Bangalore. The diocese now contains 47 parishes, the newly elevated Cathedral which was previously a parish church as "Church of Our Lady of Miracles" or the Milagres Church, the parish was partitioned from the Mangalore Diocese, while the parish church was elevated to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Miracles. Overview The Udupi district had been a part of the Diocese of Mangalore since 1887. The diocese was inaugurated on 15 October 2012 by Apostolic Nuncio of India, Salvatore Pennacchio at Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur. Milagres Church (Kallianpur)
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Miracles, Indo-Portuguese; ''Catedral de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres'' (formerly a parish church as the Church of Our Lady of Miracles, ), is a Roman Catholic Cathedral situated at Kallianpur in the Udupi district of Karnataka, India. The Milagres Church was established in 1678 as a result of a treaty between Raja Shivappa Nayaka (the Ikkeris) of Bednore and the Portuguese in Goa and Bombay-Bassein. The structure was rebuilt in its present form in 1881 AD, after the persecution of Mangalorean Christians at Seringapatam ended. The Milagres parish was elevated to the status of a cathedral church in 2012, giving a desirable fillip to the Konkani and South Canarese Christian people of the locality. Kapu, Karnataka
Kapu (''Kaup'') is a town situated in the Udupi district of Karnataka, India. It lies between the twin cities of Udupi and Mangalore, next to the National Highway 66. The villages Manchakal and Shirva are located near Kapu. It is 13 km south of Udupi and 40 km north of Mangalore. Mangalorean Catholics () are an ethno-religious community of Latin Church in India, Latin Christians from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mangalore, Diocese of Mangalore and the erstwhile South Canara area; by the southern coast of present-day Karnataka, India. Udupi District
Udupi district (also Udipi () in Kannada or Odipu () in Tulu language) is an administrative subdivision in the Karnataka state of India, with the district headquarters in the city of Udupi. It is situated in the Canara old north Malabar coastal region. There are seven taluks, 233 villages and 21 towns in Udupi district. The three northern tehsils of Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala, were partitioned from Dakshina Kannada district (South Canara) to form Udupi district on 25 August 1997. Moodabidri was officially declared as new tehsil (taluk) in 2018.
