Francis Han Tingbi
Francis Han Tingbi (; February 22, 1908 - December 21, 1991) was a Chinese Catholic priest and Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hongdong between 1950 and 1991. Biography Han came from a Catholic family who had moved from Shandong to Shanxi after and because of the Taiping Rebellion. He was ordained a priest on July 22, 1934. On April 18, 1950, he was appointed Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hongdong by Pope Pius XII. On July 9, his consecration ceremony was held. In 1958, during the rule of Mao Zedong, Hongdong was selected as one of the two pilot counties for the elimination of religion in China (the other is Pingyang, Zhejiang). The local Catholic Church was facing a catastrophe and the cathedral was demolished. After being released in 1979, he resumed leadership in his diocese. Joseph Sun Yuanmo
Joseph Sun Yuanmo (; November 7, 1920February 23, 2006) was a Chinese Catholic priest and Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hongdong. Biography From the age of 15, Sun was educated in a lower spiritual seminary. He also studied philosophy and theology (including in Beijing). In 1948 he was ordained a priest, and worked as a pastor in Guangxi. During the Cultural Revolution, he was required to work in the countryside. Later he was in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hongdong (Shanxi province) as a parish priest, rector of the lower seminary, and spiritual director of nuns. In 1982 he was secretly consecrated by Bishop Francis Han Tingbi and became the auxiliary bishop of Hongdong. In 1991, he was the coadjutor of Bishop Francis Han Tingbi, and after Han death the same year, he took over the duties of the ordinary. Sun died at the age of 85 after a long illness. An apostolic prefect or prefect apostolic is a priest who heads what is known as an apostolic prefecture, a 'pre-diocesan' missionary jurisdiction where the Catholic Church is not yet sufficiently developed to have it made a diocese. Although it usually has an (embryonal) see, it is often not called after such city but rather after a natural or administrative (in many cases colonial) geographical area. If a prefecture grows and flourishes, it may be elevated to an apostolic vicariate, headed by a titular bishop, in the hope that with time the region will generate enough Catholics and stability for its Catholic institutions, to warrant being established as a diocese. Shanxi (; ; formerly romanised as Shansi) is a landlocked province of the People's Republic of China and is part of the North China region. The capital and largest city of the province is Taiyuan, while its next most populated prefecture-level cities are Changzhi and Datong.
