Rolette House
The Rolette House is located in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. History Construction of the house was begun by Jean Joseph Rolette, but he died before it was completed. Later, it was turned into a hotel and a boarding house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and on the State Register of Historic Places in 1989. Prairie du Chien () is a city in and the county seat of Crawford County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,506 at the 2020 census. Its ZIP Code is 53821. Often referred to as Wisconsin's second oldest city, Prairie du Chien was established as a European settlement by French voyageurs in the late seventeenth century. Its settlement date of June 17, 1673, makes it the fourth colonial settlement by European settlers in the Midwestern United States, following Green Bay, Wisconsin, Sault Ste. Jean Joseph Rolette
Jean Joseph Rolette (September 24, 1781 – December 3, 1842), often known as Joseph Rolette, was a prominent fur trader and member of the Mackinac Company who operated a trading post in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Youth and early career Rolette was born in Quebec in 1781 to ethnic French parents. As a young man he trained for the priesthood at a Jesuit seminary there, but he did not complete his studies. After leaving the seminary, he became involved in the fur trade. He worked briefly in Windsor, Ontario before establishing a trading post for the Mackinac Company in the remote village of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Prairie du Chien sometime between 1801 and 1805, in what is now the state of Wisconsin in the United States. In 1811, the Mackinac Company was reorganized as the South West Company, and Rolette became a major partner in the business. Brisbois House
The Brisbois House, also known as the Bernard Brisbois House, is a historic house located on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Built circa 1840, the stone house is one of the oldest in Wisconsin. It was once thought to be built in 1808 by early settler and fur trader Michael Brisbois, but in the early 1920s, historians learned that it was built by his son after his death. The house is a National Historic Landmark and is now owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Appearance The Brisbois House is two-and-a-half stories tall and built from locally extracted gray limestone. The front facade has five bays, with a central entrance and two pairs of windows on either side. Fluted Doric columns flank the front entrance, and molded trim forms the rest of the doorway; the lightness of these features reflects a Federal influence.
