Roland Arthur Charles North
Roland Arthur Charles North, CMG (28 January 1889 – 18 June 1961) was an English colonial administrator. He was the Secretary for Chinese Affairs in the Hong Kong colonial government. He was interned at Stanley Camp during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. North was born at Beggearnhuish House, Nettlecombe, Somerset, England on 28 January 1889 to artist John William North. He joined the civil service in 1912 and became Secretary for Chinese Affairs in Hong Kong in 1936 and served until the fall of Hong Kong. He had also acted as Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong and Officer Administering the Government in 1936. North was interned at the Stanley Camp throughout the occupation. During the occupation, he asked the leading figures in the Chinese community, including Shouson Chow and Robert Kotewall to collaborate with the Japanese, "to take upon themselves what should have been my duty in working with the Japanese." RMS Strathmore
RMS ''Strathmore'' was an ocean liner and Royal Mail Ship of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O), the third of five sister ships built for P&O in the "Strath" class. Launched in 1935, she served on the company's route from London to India until 1940, when she was requisitioned for war service as a troop ship, and redesignated as SS ''Strathmore'', until being returned to her owners in 1948. After a long refit, she resumed service with P&O from 1949 until 1963, when she was sold to Latsis Lines and renamed ''Marianna Latsi'', then ''Henrietta Latsi'', before being laid up in 1967 and finally scrapped in 1969. Norman Lockhart Smith ( Chinese Translated Name: 史美; 29 May 1887 – 27 January 1968) was a British colonial administrator who served as Acting Administrator of Hong Kong on various occasions. Smith was born in Ryton, County Durham, England. Smith's father was a businessman and politician Hugh Crawford Smith, who was elected M.P. for Tyneside in 1900. Smith's mother was Hannah Ralston Lockhart. Smith was educated in Sedbergh and attended Queen's College, Oxford. He entered the Hong Kong Civil Service in 1910 and was seconded for military service during the First World War. In Hong Kong, Smith was appointed principal assistant colonial secretary in 1931, director of education in 1933 and secretary for Chinese affairs in 1934.
