Roger W. Smith (political Scientist)
Roger W. Smith OBE (born 1970) is a British independent watchmaker. Smith was a Bronze Medallist of the British Horological Institute (awarded to the most outstanding graduating student of any given year). Biography Born in Bolton near Manchester in 1970, Roger Smith grew up with little interest in academic pursuits, but he had a talent for the practical. On reaching the age of 16, his father suggested enrolling him in a course at the local Manchester School of Horology. Subsequently, he passed at the top of his class, winning the British Horological Institute’s Bronze medal, awarded for the highest overall mark of the year. During his time in the Institute, George Daniels was a visiting speaker, and from that moment Roger knew that he wanted to make watches by hand. Smith became interested in making watches by hand. British Horological Institute
The British Horological Institute (BHI) is the representative body of the horology, horological industry in the United Kingdom. It was founded by a group of clockmakers in 1858, and has its current premises at Upton Hall, Nottinghamshire, Upton Hall in Nottinghamshire, which includes a museum of clock history. History The BHI was founded in 1858 by a small group of clockmakers, one of whom was Edward Daniel Johnson. Their aim was to unify the British horological industry and trades in the face of large numbers of imports of clocks and watches from abroad. The institute was an immediate success and within a year it had founded its own museum and library; it also began to offer evening classes in clock- and watch-making. The journal of the institute is the ''Horological Journal'', which has been published monthly since September 1858. George Daniels (watchmaker)
George Daniels, Order of the British Empire, CBE, British Horological Institute, FBHI, Society of Antiquaries of London, FSA, Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants, AHCI (19 August 1926 – 21 October 2011) was an English horologist, inventor of the coaxial escapement, author and a classic car collector. He hand built 23 pocket watches and two wrist watches, as well as clocks. As at December 2022, only Patek Phillipe and Rolex watches have achieved higher prices. Six of his watches have each sold for in excess of USD$1.5 million. Producing a single watch and its components required 2,500 hours from Daniels, over about a year. Commentators have referred to them as 'works of art' and 'technological and horological master pieces'. Typically his watches had clear, clean dials with subsidiary dials interwoven with the main chapter ring. It was founded in London in 1796, and has head offices in London and in New York City. In 2022 it was owned by the Mercury Group, a Russian luxury goods company.
