Rodolfo Gil Benumeya
Rodolfo Gil Benumeya (5 June 1901 – 31 March 1975) was a Spanish-Andalusian writer, historian, and Arabist from a Morisco background. He was one of the main proponents of Andalusian nationalism and Moriscoism, which emphasized the cultural differences between Andalusians and the rest of Spain. He dedicated much of his research to the study of Al-Andalus and supported Moroccan nationalism, seeing Morocco and Andalus as one land separated by the Strait of Gibraltar. Andújar
Andújar () is a Spanish municipality of 35,619 people (2024) in the province of Jaén, in Andalusia. The municipality is divided by the Guadalquivir River. The northern part of the municipality is where the Natural Park of the Sierra de Andújar is situated. To the south are agricultural fields and countryside. The city proper located on the right bank of the Guadalquivir and the Madrid- Córdoba railway. In the past, Andújar was widely known for its porous earthenware jars, called '' alcarrazas'' or '' botijos'', which keep water cool in the hottest weather, and were manufactured from a whitish clay found in the neighbourhood. An Arabist is someone, often but not always from outside the Arab world, who specialises in the study of the Arabic language and Arab culture, culture (usually including Arabic literature). Origins Arabists began in Al Andalus, medieval Muslim Spain, which lay on the frontier between the Muslim world and Christendom. At various times, either a Christian or a Muslim kingdom might be the most hospitable toward scholars. Translation of Arabic texts into Latin (mostly of works on mathematics and astronomy) began as early as the 10th century, major works dates from the School of Toledo, which began during the reign of Alfonso VII of Castile, (1105–1157). Morisco
''Moriscos'' (, ; ; "Moorish") were former Muslims and their descendants whom the Catholic Church and Habsburg Spain commanded to forcibly convert to Christianity or face compulsory exile after Spain outlawed Islam. Spain had a sizeable Muslim population, the '' mudéjars'', in the early 16th century. The Iberian Union mistrusted Moriscos and feared that they would prompt new invasions from the Ottoman Empire after the Fall of Constantinople, so between 1609 and 1614 they began to expel them systematically from the various kingdoms of the Union. The most severe expulsions occurred in the eastern Kingdom of Valencia. The exact number of Moriscos present in Spain before the expulsion is unknown and can only be guessed based on official records of the edict of expulsion. The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Europe from Africa. Blas Infante Pérez de Vargas (5 July 1885 – 11 August 1936) was an Andalusian socialist politician, Georgist, writer, historian and musicologist. He is considered the "father of Andalusia" by Andalusian nationalists. He initiated an Andalusian regionalist assembly in Ronda in 1918; the assembly adopted a charter based on the autonomist ''Constitución Federal de Antequera'' written in 1883 during the First Spanish Republic. It also embraced the current flag and emblem as national symbols, designed by Infante himself based on various historic Andalusian standards. During the Second Spanish Republic, the ''Andalucismo'' was represented by the ''Junta Liberalista'', a federalist political party led by Infante.
