Rockhill Barracks
Rockhill Barracks ( ga, Beairic Chnoc na Carraige) was an Irish Army barracks located in Letterkenny, County Donegal. The Barracks was forced to close due to the 2008–2012 global recession, 2008 economic meltdown. History Rockhill House is a 30-room period building originally built as a manor house in the 17th century for the gentry. Captain Thomas Chambers is the earliest recorded occupier of the house in 1660. The present structure dates from 1824 and is a listed building. Rockhill House was occupied by The Irregulars during the Irish Civil War. They were removed from the building by a pro-treaty crowd who were led by Letterkenny native James McMonagle. Rockhill House which houses the barracks was later privately owned by Sir Charles John Stewart. His two sons were killed during World War I. Letterkenny ( ga, Leitir Ceanainn , meaning 'hillside of the O'Cannons'), nicknamed 'the Cathedral Town', is the largest and most populous town in County Donegal, a county in Ulster, the northern province in Ireland. Letterkenny lies on the River Swilly in East Donegal in the north-west of Ulster, and has a population of 19,274. Ballyshannon
Ballyshannon () is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. It is located at the southern end of the county where the N3 from Dublin ends and the N15 crosses the River Erne. Incorporated in 1613, it is one of the oldest towns in Ireland. Location Ballyshannon, which means "the mouth of Seannach's ford", after a fifth-century warrior, Seannach, who was slain there, lies at the mouth of the river Erne. The Green Party ( ga, Comhaontas Glas, , Green Alliance) is a green political party that operates in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Main Street, Letterkenny
Main Street ( ga, An Phríomhshráid) is an important thoroughfare in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. Sometimes claimed to be the longest street in Ireland, it is divided into two sections, with Lower Main Street (the south end) running from the junction at Oldtown Road to the Market Square and Upper Main Street (the north end) running from the Market Square to the junction at Crossview House. Traffic flows in a one-way system from Crossview House southwards. History Theobald Wolfe Tone was captured and held on the street during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. He was held for a short time at Laird's Hotel opposite the Market Square before being transferred to the nearby Derry Gaol. Denis McGinley (born 27 April 1945) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who served as a Minister of State from 2011 to 2014. Oldtown, Letterkenny
Oldtown ( ga, An Seanbhaile) is a district of Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland, in the parish of Conwal and Leck to the south of the River Swilly. As its name suggests, it is the oldest part of Letterkenny—being older than Letterkenny itself—and was the starting point of the area's development. Oldtown is bordered by Creeve to the west and Lismonaghan to the south.
