Rochestown GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Rochestown, County Cork, Ireland. The club, part of the Carrigdhoun division, fields teams in both hurling and Gaelic football. History Located in Rochestown, County Cork, Rochestown GAA Club, then known as Crusaders, was founded in 1923. The club uses the nearby St Francis College pitch as its home ground. The club, one of the smallest in Cork, had just 25 registered players and a committee of ten when they won the Junior C League title in 2017. St Francis College Rochestown
St. Francis College Rochestown, sometimes known as Rochestown College or abbreviated as Roco, is an all-boys secondary school in Rochestown, Cork, Ireland. The school's foundation dates to 1884 when a friary was formed by the Franciscan Order. History In the 1870s the Capuchin ( Franciscan) order of friars opened a church and monastery on the Rochestown-Monkstown road near Cork city. In the 1880s, a school for novitiates (those seeking to join the order) was opened on the site. While this novitiate school was moved to Kilkenny and elsewhere for some decades, in the 1930s the school returned to the Rochestown friary. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, coinciding with a move to free education in the state, the college expanded into the friary itself, and "dormitories were converted into classrooms". Rochestown
Rochestown is a primarily residential area in Cork City, Ireland. Originally a somewhat rural area in County Cork, housing developments in the 20th and 21st centuries have connected the area to Douglas and nearby suburbs. The area was formally incorporated into Cork City following the 2019 Cork boundary change on 31 May 2019, along with the surrounding areas of Douglas, Grange and Frankfield. The R610 trunk road passes through the area, linking Rochestown and other villages in lower Cork Harbour, to the city centre. Rochestown Road also links Douglas with the N40 South Ring Road. Carrigdhoun GAA
Carrigdhoun GAA is one of the eight baronies or Gaelic Athletic Association divisions that make up Cork. The division is made up of eleven Gaelic Athletic Association teams, making it one of the smaller divisions. The division is also known as the South East division. It extends from just south of Cork city down to Ballinspittle in the south of the county. The 11 teams are Ballinhassig, Ballygarvan, Ballymartle from Riverstick, Belgooly, Carrigaline, Crosshaven, Courcey Rovers from Ballinadee and Ballinspittle, Kinsale, Shamrocks from Ringaskiddy/ Monkstown, Tracton from Minane Bridge, and Valley Rovers from Innishannon. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). South East Junior A Hurling Championship
The South East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Carrigdhoun Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1928 for junior hurling teams in the southeastern region of County Cork, Ireland. The series of games begin in July, with the championship culminating with the final in the autumn. The championship includes a knock-out stage and a "back door" for teams defeated in the first round. The South East Junior Championship is an integral part of the wider Cork Junior Hurling Championship. The winners and runners-up of the South East Cork championship join their counterparts from the other six divisions to contest the county championship. Jim Foley (footballer)
Jim Foley (born October 27, 1946) is a former award-winning slotback in the Canadian Football League. He was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in the 1970 CFL College Draft, winning the CFL's Rookie of the Year Award in 1971, and later won the 1975 Most Outstanding Canadian Award and two Grey Cups with the Ottawa Rough Riders. Career He attended St. Dunstan's University, later to become the University of Prince Edward Island, and played football from 1966 to 1969. He is one of the few professional football players to come from UPEI. Foley was named the team’s Most Valuable Player and the top athlete for 3 consecutive years. In his junior year Foley was also MVP of the Bluenose Conference. He was also the rushing leader with 809 yards and the rushing average leader at 9.6 yards per carry. Justin McCarthy (hurler)
Justin J. McCarthy (born 1945 in Passage West, County Cork) is an Irish former hurling manager and former player, who took over as manager of the Limerick senior inter-county team in October 2008. He played hurling with his local club Passage and with the Cork senior inter-county team in the 1960s and 1970s. As a player McCarthy was involved with the Cork team of the late 1960s. In a senior inter-county career that lasted from 1964 until 1974 he won one All-Ireland title, three Munster titles, two National Hurling League titles and two Railway Cup titles. Over the last four decades McCarthy has had some success as a manager with many different teams. In the 1970s he coached Antrim to an All-Ireland title at intermediate level before capturing back-to-back National Hurling League titles with Clare. The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887. The final, currently held on the third Sunday in August, is the culmination of a series of games played during July and August, with the winning team receiving the Liam MacCarthy Cup.
