Rochester, Hornellsville, And Pine Creek Railroad Company
The Rochester, Hornellsville, and Pine Creek Railroad (RH&PC) was a railroad company organized in New York state in the 1870s. It did some grading but never laid track nor opened its line. Its articles of association were filed on March 30, 1871, in New York and was formed according to the railroad laws of the state. It planned to build a railroad line from Hornellsville to the New York-Pennsylvania state line. In 1874, the railroad line was long and only a portion of it was graded at that time. The RH&PC, which merged with two other railways to become the Geneva, Hornellsville, and Pine Creek Railway in 1876, never completed the line and town citizens were asked to repay the bonds. This led to the Greenwood, New York, insurrection of 1882. In 1896, Greenwood got rail service from the New York & Pennsylvania Railroad, which used some of the RH&PC grading. Hornellsville is a town in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population, not counting the city of Hornell, was 4,039 at the 2020 census. The name is taken from a prominent pioneer family. The Town of Hornellsville is at the western border of the county, and surrounds the city of Hornell. Until 1906, the city of Hornell was named Hornellsville. The name Hornellsville is used only in real estate or legal contexts, but rarely in conversation. This is because Hornell is much more frequently mentioned, and its boundaries are quite different. The Elmira and Lake Ontario Railroad was a subsidiary of the Northern Central Railway and later the Pennsylvania Railroad, formed to give the Northern Central an outlet for coal traffic on Lake Ontario. Predecessors Horseheads–Canandaigua The Canandaigua and Corning Railroad Company was incorporated by a special act of the New York Legislature on May 14, 1845, to build between the two points named, and the Chemung Railroad was incorporated on the same date.
