Roca Islands
Roca Islands () is a group of small islands between Cruls Islands and Anagram Islands on the south side of French Passage in the Wilhelm Archipelago. Discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903–05, and named by Charcot for Julio A. Roca, President of Argentina, 1880–86 and 1898–1904. The name was incorrectly applied to the Anagram Islands by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1934–37, but was reidentified with this group after further mapping by the British Naval Hydrographic Survey Unit in 1958. Cruls Islands
The Cruls Islands or Crulls Islands are a group of small islands lying west of the Roca Islands in the southern part of the Wilhelm Archipelago. They were discovered by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, 1897–99, and named by Gerlache for Luís Cruls (also known as Louis Crulls), a Belgian astronomer and later Director of the Observatory at Rio de Janeiro. Anagram Islands
The Anagram Islands () are a group of small islands and rocks lying between the Roca Islands and the Argentine Islands, in the Wilhelm Archipelago, Antarctica. Location The islands are off the Graham Coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The French Passage lies between the Vedel Islands to the northeast and the islands that include the Anagram Islands to the southwest. The Betbeder Islands are to the west and the Berthelot Islands to the southeast. Exploration and name The area was charted by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition (BelgAE) under Adrien de Gerlache, 1897–99, the French Antarctic Expedition (FrAE) under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, 1903–05 and 1908–10, and the British Graham Land expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, 1934–37. French Passage
French Passage () is a passage through the Wilhelm Archipelago, extending in a northwest–southeast direction between Petermann Island, the Stray Islands, the Vedel Islands and the Myriad Islands to the north and the Argentine Islands, the Anagram Islands, the Roca Islands, and the Cruls Islands to the south. It was so named by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1934–37, because the passage was navigated for the first time in 1909 by the Pourquoi-Pas?, the ship of the French Antarctic Expedition under Jean-Baptiste Charcot. Wilhelm Archipelago
The Wilhelm Archipelago is an island archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula in Antarctica. Wilhelm Archipelago consists of numerous islands, the largest of which are Booth Island and Hovgaard Island (Antarctica), Hovgaard Island. The archipelago extends from Bismarck Strait southwest to Lumus Rock, off the west coast of Graham Land. It was discovered by a German expedition under Eduard Dallmann, 1873–74. He named them for Wilhelm I, then German Emperor and King of Prussia. French Antarctic Expedition
The French Antarctic Expedition is any of several French expeditions in Antarctica. 1837–1840 In 1837, during an 1837–1840 expedition across the deep southern hemisphere, Captain Jules Dumont d'Urville sailed his ship ''Astrolabe'' along a coastal area of Antarctica which he later named Adélie Land, in honor of his wife. During the Antarctic part of this expedition, Dumont d'Urville team performed the first experiments to determine the approximate position of the South magnetic pole, and landed on Débarquement Rock in the Géologie Archipelago, () just 4 km from the mainland, where he took mineral and animal samples.
