Robin Tonniau
Robin J. E. Tonniau (born 3 May 1985) is a Belgian politician and member of the Chamber of Representatives. A member of the Workers' Party of Belgium, he has represented East Flanders since June 2024. Tonniau was born on 3 May 1985 in Ronse. He is an industrial worker and started working at the Volkswagen Vorst factory at the age of 18. He lost his job after production of Volkswagen models ceased at the factory. He held several jobs thereafter but eventually found employment at Volvo Car Gent. Tonniau joined the Workers' Party of Belgium (PVDA) in 2014. He contested the 2018 local election as the PVDA's first placed candidate in Ronse but the party failed to win any seats in the municipality. The Chamber of Representatives (; ; ) is one of the two chambers in the Bicameralism, bicameral Belgian Federal Parliament, Federal Parliament of Belgium, the other being the Senate (Belgium), Senate. It is considered to be the "lower house" of the Federal Parliament. East Flanders (Chamber Of Representatives Constituency)
East Flanders (; ; ) is one of the 11 multi-member constituencies of the Chamber of Representatives, the lower house of the Belgian Federal Parliament, the national legislature of Belgium. The constituency was established in 2003 following the re-organisation of constituencies across Belgium along provincial lines. It is conterminous with the province of East Flanders. The constituency currently elects 20 of the 150 members of the Chamber of Representatives using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. Ronse
Ronse (; ) is a Belgian city and a municipality in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality only encompasses the city of Ronse proper. History Early settlements to 14th century The hills around Ronse show clues of human activity in the Paleolithic period. In the Neolithic, the area was populated with settled farmers and cattle breeders. Assorted fragments of building structures also attest of settlements in the area during Roman times. Ronse's urban center took shape in the 7th century, when Saint Amand – or one of his successors – built a church and monastery in honour of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the 9th century, Ronse and its monastery were given to the Inde Monastery (in Cornelismünster, near Aachen) by Louis the Pious. The Workers' Party of Belgium (PTB-PVDA) is a Marxist and socialist political party in Belgium. It is the only Belgian party represented in parliament that is a fully national party, representing both Flanders and Wallonia. 2019 Belgian Federal Election
Federal elections were held in Belgium on 26 May 2019, alongside the country's European and regional elections. All 150 members of the Chamber of Representatives were elected from eleven multi-member constituencies. The far right-wing Vlaams Belang (VB) saw a resurgence in Flanders, and with the New Flemish Alliance (NVA), parties subscribing to Flemish separatism and nationalism obtained nearly 50% of the vote in Flanders.
