Robin Fletcher
Robin Anthony Fletcher (30 May 1922 – 15 January 2016) was a British academic administrator, and a British field hockey player who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics. He was a member of the British field hockey team which won the bronze medal. He played all three matches as forward. Fletcher was a scholar of modern Greek who was a Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, from 1950 to 1989, and later became an emeritus Fellow. Between 1951 and 1974 he combined the position of Domestic Bursar with a university lectureship in modern Greek. From 1980 to 1989 he served as Warden of Rhodes House, Oxford, responsible for the running of the Rhodes Scholarship The Rhodes Scholarship is an international postgraduate award for students to study at the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom. Field Hockey At The Summer Olympics
Field hockey was introduced at the Olympic Games as a men's competition at the 1908 Games in London, with six teams, four from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and other two were France and Germany. History Field hockey was removed from the Summer Olympic Games at the 1924 Paris Games because of the lack of an international sporting structure. The International Hockey Federation (FIH, ''Fédération Internationale de Hockey'') was founded in Paris that year as a response to field hockey's omission. Men's field hockey became a permanent feature at the next Olympic Games, the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. For a long time, India dominated the Olympics, winning the men's gold medal in seven out of eight Olympics from 1928 to 1964. The 1952 Summer Olympics ( fi, Kesäolympialaiset 1952; sv, Olympiska sommarspelen 1952), officially known as the Games of the XV Olympiad ( fi, XV olympiadin kisat; sv, Den XV olympiadens spel) and commonly known as Helsinki 1952 ( sv, Helsingfors 1952), were an international multi-sport event held from 19 July to 3 August 1952 in Helsinki, Finland. After Japan declared in 1938 that it would be unable to host 1940 Olympics in Tokyo due to the ongoing Second Sino-Japanese War, Helsinki had been selected to host the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were then cancelled due to World War II. Tokyo eventually hosted the games in 1964. Helsinki is the northernmost city at which a summer Olympic Games have been held.
