Robeson Channel () is a body of water lying between Greenland and Canada's northernmost island, Ellesmere Island. It is the most northerly part of Nares Strait, linking Hall Basin to the south with the Arctic Ocean to the north. The Newman Fjord in Greenland has its mouth in the Robeson Channel. It is about in length and between wide. Alert, the world's most northerly permanently inhabited settlement, lies nearby. Robeson Township is a township in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,216 at the 2010 census. History Robeson Township was named for Andrew Robeson, an early settler. The Allegheny Aqueduct, Geiger Mill, Joanna Furnace Complex, and Thompson Mill are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Eslanda "Essie" Cardozo Goode Robeson (December 15, 1895 – December 13, 1965) was an American anthropologist, author, actress, and civil rights activist. She was the wife and business manager of performer Paul Robeson. Biography Early years and marriage Eslanda Cardozo Goode was born in Washington, D.C., on December 15, 1895. Her maternal great-grandparents were Isaac Nunez Cardozo, a Sephardic Jew whose family was expelled from Spain in the 17th century, and Lydia Weston, who was of partial African descent and had been enslaved and then manumitted in 1826 by Plowden Weston in Charleston, South Carolina. Their son, Francis Lewis Cardozo, was the first black Secretary of State of South Carolina, and he married Catherine Romena Howell, daughter of an Englishwoman and a man of color from the West Indies. Paul Leroy Robeson ( ; April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an American bass-baritone concert artist, actor, professional American football, football player, and activist who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political stances. In 1915, Robeson won an academic scholarship to Rutgers University, Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he was the only African-American student. While at Rutgers, he was twice named a consensus College Football All-America Team, All-American in football and was elected class valedictorian. He earned his LL.B. from Columbia Law School, while playing in the National Football League (NFL).
