Roberts Ķīlis
Roberts Ķīlis (14 March 1968 – 18 March 2022) was a Latvian politician and social anthropologist who served as Minister for Education and Science of Latvia. Roberts Skadats
Roberts Skadats (1948) is a former Latvian football midfielder and forward who played with FK Daugava Rīga for most of his career. Playing biography After completing secondary education Skadats was offered to join Daugava - the top football team in Latvia - at the age of 18 years. His first season he spent with Daugava reserves where he was team leader. Skadats was unhappy with his position in Daugava and was close to leaving the team and joining Zvejnieks Liepāja but the team manager persuaded him that he was counting on Skadats as a future main squad player. And that he indeed became - not only he played 77 matches in 1969–1970 for Daugava but also scored 15 goals (in 1969 he proved that he could become a successor to the Daugava star veteran player - Gunārs Ulmanis and Georgijs Smirnovs). Roberts Pakalns
Roberts Pakalns (7 November 1911 – 17 May 1986) was a Latvian footballer and football manager, a three-time champion of Latvia. Biography Roberts Pakalns spent almost his entire football career with ASK Riga. He started regularly appearing in the senior squad in 1929 and played until the club's dissolution in 1940. During these years Pakalns won one Latvian Higher League title (in 1932) and won the Latvian Cup in 1943. In between 1935 and 1940 Pakalns played 8 international matches for Latvia scoring one goal. When ASK Riga as a former Latvian army sports club was disbanded in 1940, Pakalns joined the newly founded RDKA Riga. During World War II he also played with Spartaks Rīga and Spars Riga. After the war Pakalns played with FK Dinamo Rīga first in the Latvian higher league, then – in the Soviet league, in 1948 he played with Daugava Rīga. Rumbula Massacre
The Rumbula massacre is a collective term for incidents on November 30 and December 8, 1941, in which about 25,000 Jews were murdered in or on the way to Rumbula forest near Riga, Latvia, during the Holocaust. Except for the Babi Yar massacre in Ukraine, this was the biggest two-day Holocaust atrocity until the operation of the death camps. About 24,000 of the victims were Latvian Jews from the Riga Ghetto and approximately 1,000 were German Jews transported to the forest by train. The Rumbula massacre was carried out by the Nazi ''Einsatzgruppe'' A with the help of local collaborators of the Arajs Kommando, with support from other such Latvian auxiliaries. In charge of the operation was Höherer SS und Polizeiführer Friedrich Jeckeln, who had previously overseen similar massacres in Ukraine. Roberts Mūrnieks
Roberts Mūrnieks (4 July 1952 – 16 January 1991) was the first person killed by Soviet OMON during the Barricades in 1991 in Latvia. His funeral became a public protest against Soviet occupation and aggression in Latvia. Biography Mūrnieks was born on 4 July 1952 in Pelši, in the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic, which today is Latvia. He went to Preiļi № 1 High School, but after the 5th class moved with his family to Riga. In 1991 Mūrnieks was working for the Ministry of Transport as a driver, when he was shot near Vecmīlgrāvis bridge during the events of the Barricades. He died as a result of a bullet to the head on 16 January 1991, at Riga's № 1 hospital. On 17 January the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia expressed condolences for Mūrnieks' death, saying it was as a result of banditry by a militia unit of the USSR Ministry of the Interior, and created a commission to organise his funeral.
