Roberto Delgado (swimmer)
Roberto Delgado Martillo (born April 3, 1975) is an American-Ecuadorian former swimmer who specialized in freestyle and butterfly events. A two-time Olympian (1996 and 2000), he holds numerous Ecuadorian records in both 100 and 200 m butterfly, and retains his dual resident status to compete internationally for his parents' homeland. While studying in the United States, Delgado has been listed as an all-time Top 10 performer in the 200 m butterfly for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Career Early years Delgado was born in Mission Viejo, California, United States to Ecuadorian parents, giving him a dual residential status. Coming from an athletic pedigree, he grew up most of his life in an aquatic field. Robin James Backhaus (born February 12, 1955) is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic medalist, and former world record-holder. High School swimming He attended Cope Junior High School and later swam for both Redlands Senior High School and the Redlands Aquatics Association in Redlands, California. In 1973, in his Senior year in High School, he moved to Northern California from the Redlands near Los Angeles and swam with and graduated from San Rafael High School near San Francisco while also swimming with the Marin Aquatic Club under Don Swartz. Swimming for Redlands Swimming Association as a Junior Swimmer at the Pacific Southwest YMCA Swimming and Diving Championships in the summer of 1970, he set an age group record of 57.1 for the 100-yard butterfly, and a 23.2 in the 50-yard freestyle, fractions of a second off the former age group record. The LA84 Foundation (known until June 2007 as the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles) is a private, nonprofit institution created by the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee to manage Southern California's endowment from the 1984 Olympic Games. Under an agreement made in 1979, 40 percent of any surplus was to stay in Southern California, with the other 60 percent going to the United States Olympic Committee. An athletic scholarship is a form of scholarship to attend a college or university or a private school, private high school awarded to an individual based predominantly on their ability to play in a sport. Athletic scholarships are common in the United States and to a certain extent in Canada, but in the vast majority of countries in the world they are rare or non-existent.
