Roberto Cesaretti
Vice Admiral Roberto Cesaretti is a retired Italian naval officer who served as Deputy Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. He commanded the minesweepers ''Mango'' and ''Sandalo'' and in 1984 commanded frigate ''Zeffiro'' before attending the US Naval War College. In 1990-91 he commanded Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi. He was promoted to Flag rank on 31 December 1994. From October 1999 to October 2000 he assumed command of Italian Blue Water Surface Forces (COMFORAL). He was promoted to vice admiral on 1 January 2002 before assuming the position of Deputy Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in October 2002. Italian Aircraft Carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi
''Giuseppe Garibaldi'' was an Italian aircraft carrier, the first through-deck aviation ship ever built for the Italian Navy, and the first Italian ship built to operate fixed-wing aircraft. Although she was widely recognised as a carrier first and foremost, she was officially designated as an aircraft-carrying cruiser. The ship was equipped with short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft and helicopters. ''Giuseppe Garibaldi'' was involved in combat air operations off Somalia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Libya. The ship was retired in 2024 and replaced by the LHD . Design The ''Giuseppe Garibaldi'' was the fourth ship of the Italian Navy to be named after the 19th-century Italian General Giuseppe Garibaldi. All four ships, including the missile cruiser, together with an image of Garibaldi, were depicted in the crest. Italian Frigate Zeffiro (F577)
''Zeffiro'' (F 577) is the eighth ship of the Maestrale-class frigate of the Italian Navy. Development The ''Maestrale''-class frigates were primarily designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), however the ships are highly flexible so they are also capable of anti-air and anti-surface operations. Ships of this class have been widely used in various international missions, either under NATO or UN flag, and during normal operations of the Italian Navy. The first of these ships entered in service in early 1982. The rest of the fleet was launched over the next three years. The ships of the ''Maestrale'' class will be replaced by the ''Bergamini'' class. Construction and career She was laid down on 15 March 1983 and launched on 19 May 1984 by Fincantieri shipyards. Commissioned on 4 May 1985 with the hull number F 577. Allied Maritime Command (MC) Naples (MC Naples) was a subordinate command of Allied Joint Force Command Naples. MC Naples operated from the island of Nisida in the Gulf of Pozzuoli and its commander reported directly to the Commander Allied Joint Force Command Naples (Com JFC Naples). The command was deactivated in March 2013. History In June 1967, Allied Forces Mediterranean was deactivated and a new force, Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe (NAVSOUTH), was created. NAVSOUTH was a subordinate command under the Commander-in-Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe (CINCAFSOUTH).
