Robert Swannell
Robert William Ashburnham Swannell (born 18 November 1950) is a British businessman, public servant and former investment banker. He was the chairman of Marks & Spencer from 2011 to 2017, and chairman of the Shareholder Executive and its successor UK Government Investments from 2014 to 2021. Personal life Swannell was born on 18 November 1950 in Nanyuki, Kenya. He attended Rugby School in Warwickshire where he was chairman of the governing board. Swannell is married and has two children. Career Swannell qualified as a chartered accountant and was later called to the bar. Swannell worked in investment banking for 33 years with Schroders and Citigroup. During this time he was senior non-executive director at British Land and 3i Group, and chairman of HMV from February 2009 to March 2011. Nanyuki
Nanyuki is a market town in Laikipia County of Kenya lying northwest of Mount Kenya along the A2 road (Kenya), A2 road and at the terminus of the branch railway from Nairobi. The name is derived from Enyaanyukie Maasai word for resemblance. It is situated just north of the Equator (0° 01' North). In 1907, British diaspora, British immigrants settled in Nanyuki, some of whose descendants still live in and around the town. Nanyuki is currently the main airfield (airbase) of the Kenya Air Force. The British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK), has a base at Nyati Barracks. It conducts infantry exercises in Laikipia and on Kenyan Ministry of Defense land at Archer's Post. Archibald John Norman (born 1 May 1954) is a British businessman and politician. He is the only person to have been chairman of an FTSE 100 company and a Member of the House of Commons (MP) at the same time. From January 2010 to January 2016, Norman was the chairman of ITV plc. He succeeded Robert Swannell as chairman of Marks & Spencer in September 2017. ''Bates & Others v Post Office Ltd'' was a UK group legal action taken by 555 subpostmasters against Post Office Limited, commonly known as the Post Office, the state-owned post office company. It was heard by Justice Fraser in the High Court between 2017 and 2019. Six judgments were handed down, two of them dealing with substantive matters while the rest dealt with procedural matters. The Common Issues trial examined the contract between the subpostmasters and the Post Office and found largely in favour of the claimants, while the Horizon Issues trial found that Horizon, the Post Office's accounting software, contained bugs, errors and defects that could cause shortfalls in the subpostmasters' accounts. Further scheduled trials were not held, as the claimants and the Post Office settled after the Horizon Issues trial.
