Robert R. Vandiver
Robert R. Vandiver (July 22, 1805 – September 4, 1885) was an American politician and contractor from Maryland. He served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing Harford County, in 1868. Early life Robert R. Vandiver was born on July 22, 1805, in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. At a young age, his family moved to Port Deposit, Maryland. Career In 1838, Vandiver moved to Havre de Grace and worked as a contractor. He built the Protestant Episcopal Church in Easton, the Methodist Episcopal Church in Havre de Grace and the outlet lock of the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal in Lapidum. He was the superintendent of the dig that allowed the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad to move their cars between Havre de Grace and Perryville on steamers. Vandiver was a Democrat. Its county seat is Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland, Bel Air. The Maryland State Archives serves as the central depository for government records of permanent value. Perryville is a town in Cecil County, Maryland, United States. The population was 4,361 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. The town is located near an exit for Interstate 95 in Maryland, Interstate 95, on the north side of the outlet of the Susquehanna River. History Perryville was first settled by Europeans in 1622, when Edward Palmer was granted a patent for a settlement on what is now Garrett Island. The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad (PW&B) was an American railroad, headquartered in Philadelphia, that operated in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland from 1836 to 1902. It was part of an 1838 merger of four state-chartered railroads in three Mid-Atlantic (United States), Mid-Atlantic states that created a single line between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Through purchases, leases and other arrangements it created a wider network of operations including down the Delmarva Peninsula. In 1881, the PW&B was purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), which was at the time the nation's largest railroad. In 1902, the PRR merged it into its Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad. Lapidum is a ghost town in Harford County, Maryland, USA, located at the head of navigation of the Susquehanna River on the west bank across from Port Deposit. History 17th century Lapidum traces its history to the granting of early land patents for the tracts known as "Eightrapp" (1665), "Faton" (1679) and "Land of Promise" (1684). As settlers transformed the surrounding land from forest to farmland the area grew in importance as a commercial center. Susquehanna And Tidewater Canal
The Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal between Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, and Havre de Grace, Maryland, at the head of Chesapeake Bay, provided an interstate shipping alternative to 19th-century arks, rafts, and boats plying the difficult waters of the lower Susquehanna River. Built between 1836 and 1840, it ran along the west bank of the river and rendered obsolete an older, shorter canal along the east bank. Of its total length, were in Pennsylvania and in Maryland. Although rivalry between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore, Maryland, delayed its construction, the finished canal brought increased shipments of coal and other raw materials to both cities from Pennsylvania's interior.
