Robert Noble (physician)
Robert Laing Noble (February 3, 1910 – December 11, 1990) was a Canadian physician who was involved in the discovery of vinblastine. Born in Toronto, Ontario, he received his M.D. from the University of Toronto in 1934 and a Ph.D. in 1937 from the University of London. In the 1950s he helped with the discovery of vincristine and vinblastine, widely used anti-cancer drugs. In 1997, he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. In 1988, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 1984, he was awarded the Gairdner Foundation International Award. Robert Noble (company)
Robert Noble was a weaving and textiles business based in the Scottish borders town of Peebles. The origins of the company can be traced back to 1666 when it was formed in Galashiels under the name of David Ballantyne. It was at one time listed amongst the oldest surviving UK businesses. During the next two hundred years the company grew, developed and over time was merged with other businesses including George Roberts & Co. of Selkirk, Walter Thorburn of Hawick and Henry Ballantyne of Walkerburn. In 1884 it moved to a new purpose built mill at March Street in Peebles; the home of Robert Noble until late 2015. During the twentieth century Ballantyne's formed part of the Dawson International business. However, during the latter part of the twentieth century the UK textiles industry went through various re-structuring and Robert Noble was sold off as a separate business. Robert Noble RSA PSSA (27 January 1857 – 12 May 1917) was a Scottish artist specialising in landscapes. He was the first President of the Society of Scottish Artists. Life He was born in Edinburgh to Thomas Noble (b.1825), a railwayman, and his wife, Janet Inglis. In 1871 he was apprenticed to an engraver but also worked with his older cousin, James Campbell Noble, who was then an up-and-coming artist. He encouraged him to study further and Robert went to Paris to train under Carolus-Duran. Robert Noble Jones (1 August 1864–29 June 1942) was a New Zealand lawyer, public servant and land court judge. He was born in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, on 1 August 1864, and brought to New Zealand as an infant by his parents. Robert Houston Noble (November 3, 1861 – October 26, 1939) was a career officer in the United States Army. A veteran of the Apache Wars, Spanish–American War, Philippine–American War, Pancho Villa Expedition, and World War I, he attained the rank of brigadier general and was most notable for his World War I command of the 158th Infantry Brigade. Early life Robert H. Noble was born in Federalsburg, Maryland on November 3, 1861, a son of Dr. William A. Noble and Mary A. (Houston) Noble. He attended the public schools of Carroll County and the State Model School in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1880, he began attendance at the United States Military Academy, and he graduated in 1884 ranked 32 of 37. Life and times Early career Born to privilege in the city of La Plata, Roberto Noble developed a socialist ideology as an adolescent, having already earned some renown by 1918 agitating for the movement to reform Argentina's university system, whose curriculum had hitherto been largely dictated by conservative Catholics.
