Robert Neville (Royal Marines Officer)
Major-General Sir Robert Arthur Ross Neville, KCMG, CBE (17 December 1896 – 12 June 1987) was a British Royal Marines officer who served in both world wars. He was later Governor of the Bahamas from 1950 to 1953. Early life and education Neville was born the son of a British Army officer and educated at Cheltenham College before joining the Royal Marines in 1914 at the age of 17. Career Military career During World War I, he served aboard the ''King Edward VII'' and the ''Royal Oak'', participated in the Battle of Jutland, and commanded a company in France. After the war, Neville served as aide-de-camp to the governors of Hong Kong, Ceylon, and Bombay, and worked with the Indian Statutory Commission. He also served in intelligence roles in Shanghai and aboard the ''Queen Elizabeth'' in the Mediterranean Fleet. Major general (Maj Gen) is a two-star rank, "two-star" rank in the British Army and Royal Marines. The rank was also briefly used by the Royal Air Force for a year and a half, from its creation in April 1918 until August 1919. Combined Operations Headquarters was a department of the British War Office set up during Second World War to harass the Germans on the European continent by means of raids carried out by use of combined naval and army forces. History The command used air and naval units to deliver the Commandos to various targets, and then recover them. Thus, it was a combined arms coordination and command structure. Admiral of the Fleet Roger Keyes was the first director, from 17 July 1940 to 27 October 1941. He was replaced first by Lord Louis Mountbatten, who led the command for a year. He in turn was succeeded by Major General Robert Laycock (October 1943 – 1947). It comprised background staff whose job was to plan operations and to develop ideas and equipment to harass the enemy in any way possible. This is a list of governors of the Bahamas. The first English settlement in the Bahamas was on Eleuthera. In 1670, the king granted the Bahamas to the lords proprietors of the Province of Carolina, but the islands were left to themselves. The local pirates ruled a ''de facto'' ' Privateers' Republic' for several years; in 1717 the Bahamas became a British crown colony, and the pirates were driven out. During the American War of Independence, the Bahamas were briefly occupied by both American and Spanish forces. In 1964, the Bahamas achieved self-governance, and, in 1973, full independence. A knight is a person granted an honorary title of a knighthood by a head of state (including the pope) or representative for service to the monarch, the church, or the country, especially in a military capacity. The concept of a knighthood may have been inspired by the ancient Greek '' hippeis'' (ἱππεῖς) and Roman ''equites''. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities.
