Robert Michie
Major General Robert Edward Lee Michie (June 1, 1864 – June 4, 1918) was a U.S. Army general. Early life Michie was born in Bellair, Virginia, in Albemarle County on June 1, 1864, to Dr. J. Augustus Michie and Susan Jackson Michie. He graduated number twenty-six of thirty-nine from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1885. Among his classmates included several officers who would become future general officers, such as Beaumont B. Buck, Joseph E. Kuhn, Henry P. McCain, Robert Lee Bullard, George W. Burr, John D. Barrette, John M. Carson Jr., Robert A. Brown, Charles H. Muir, William F. Martin, Daniel B. Devore and Willard A. Holbrook. Military career During the Spanish–American War, Michie served as a major, U.S. Volunteers, from 1898 to 1899. George Washington Burr
George Washington Burr Jr. (1865–1923) was an American general during World War I. Early life George Washington Burr Jr. was born in Tolono, Illinois to George and Nancy Burr on December 3, 1865. Career G. W. Burr attended the United States Military Academy and graduated in 1888. He became an officer in the 1st artillery and later taught Military Science and Tactics at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Mississippi until 1893. He worked for the Ordnance Department and was promoted to the rank of captain in April 1899. He was involved in ammunition development at the Rock Island Arsenal, where he became commanding officer after his promotion to lieutenant colonel in 1910. With the involvement in World War I, the Arsenal grew from 2500 to 13000 employees. American Expeditionary Forces
The American Expeditionary Forces (A. E. F.) was a formation of the United States Army on the Western Front of World War I. The A. E. F. was established on July 5, 1917, in France under the command of General John J. Pershing. It fought alongside French Army, British Army, Canadian Army, New Zealand Army and Australian Army units against the Imperial German Army. A small number of A. E. F. troops also fought alongside Italian Army units in that same year against the Austro-Hungarian Army. The A. E. F. helped the French Army on the Western Front during the Aisne Offensive (at the Battle of Château-Thierry and Battle of Belleau Wood) in the summer of 1918, and fought its major actions in the Battle of Saint-Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in the latter part of 1918. Spartanburg is a city in and the seat of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The city of Spartanburg has a municipal population of 38,732 as of the 2020 census, making it the 11th-largest city in the state. Camp Wadsworth
Camp Wadsworth was a World War I-era training facility for the United States Army. Located near Spartanburg, South Carolina, the post was in operation from its opening in July 1917 until it was inactivated in March 1919, following the Armistice that ended the war. Creation As the United States began to expand the United States Army in preparation for entry into World War I, the United States Department of War planned to enlarge the peacetime Regular Army through a combination of mobilizing units of the National Guard and drafting men into the wartime National Army.
