Robert Menli Lyon
Robert Menli Lyon (born Robert Milne; 1789–1874) was a pioneering Western Australian settler who became one of the earliest outspoken advocates for Indigenous Australian rights and welfare in the colony. He published the first information on the Aboriginal language of the Perth area. Early life Lyon was born in Inverness, Scotland. He is thought to have had a career in the army in his youth and probably attained the military rank of captain. In 1829, at the age of about forty, Milne immigrated to what was then the British colony of Western Australia. During his time in Western Australia, Milne made no claim to military rank, initially preferring to be known simply as Robert Milne. Shortly after his arrival, he adopted the name Robert Menli Lyon, ''Menli'' being an anagram of ''Milne''. Robert Lyon (politician)
Robert Lyon (July 6, 1829 - March 21, 1888) was a lawyer, politician and judge in the County of Carleton in eastern Ontario. His oldest brother was George Byron Lyon, another mayor of Ottawa. Robert was born in the village of Richmond in 1829. He studied law and was called to the bar in 1853. He began practicing law in Ottawa in 1856. He became an alderman and later mayor. Lyon also represented Carleton in the Ontario legislature from 1867 to 1871. Robert Adam Lyon
Robert Adam Lyon (baptized 4 October 1829 – June 6, 1901) was a Canadian businessman and Liberal member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament from 1878 to 1884 and from 1885 to 1890. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1829 and came to Halton County, Ontario in Upper Canada with his parents in 1832. With his brother William Durie Lyon, he opened a general store in Milton. In 1866, he became involved in the development of timber on Manitoulin Island. He established a settlement at Michael's Bay on the island. In 1878, he became the MLA for Algoma in a by-election, replacing Simon James Dawson. He was re-elected in 1879 and 1883, but resigned in 1884 over allegations of irregularities during the election. In 1885, he was elected in the new riding of Algoma East. In 1888, his business went into bankruptcy and he was defeated in the election of 1890. He died in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Sault Ste. Robert Lyon (duellist)
Robert Lyon (30 December 1812 – 13 June 1833), the son of a British officer, was said to be the last fatality in Canadian duelling history, shot by a fellow law student, John Wilson (Ontario politician), John Wilson in 1833. Lyon was born in Inverurie, Scotland in 1812 and came to Canada along with his family in 1829. Initiated by the 20-year-old Lyon at the urging of his eventual "second" Henri Lelievre, the duel was held over the love of local schoolteacher Elizabeth Hughes, and occurred above the Tay Canal outside Perth, Ontario. After Lyon's death, Wilson and his second Samuel Robertson were both charged with murder in Brockville, Ontario, though acquitted. Two years later he married Elizabeth Hughes and they had three children together; he went on to become a judge and Member of Parliament before dying in 1869. Robert Lyon (January 15, 1810 – March 10, 1858) was an English-born Jewish-American journalist and newspaper editor. Life Lyon was born on January 15, 1810, in London, England, the son of tradesman Wolfe Lyon. Lyon initially worked as a merchant in London and joined the Maiden Lane Synagogue. In 1840, upon the marriage of Queen Victoria, he accompanied Baron de Goldsmid to personally present a congratulatory address to her. Lyon immigrated to America in 1844, settling in New York City, New York, and establishing an unsuccessful umbrella manufactory. He had essays published before he turned eighteen, when his essays were published in Jersey, where he was living at the time. During his early years in America, he contributed the occasional article essay to various periodicals. He then began to take an interest in the local Jewish community, which lacked its own newspaper. Major-General Robert Lyon (24 October 1923 – 13 November 2019) was a British Army officer. Military career Educated at Ayr Academy, Lyon was commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in August 1943 and saw action in Europe during the Second World War.''Who's Who 2010'', A & C Black, 2010, After transferring to the Royal Artillery in 1947, he became commanding officer of 4th Light Regiment Royal Artillery in 1965 and in that role was deployed to Borneo during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation.
