Robert Lowther (1741–1777)
Robert Lowther (1741–1777) was an English member of parliament, the younger son of Robert Lowther and Catherine Pennington and younger brother of James Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale. Brought into Parliament for the Government through his older brother's interest, Robert defied the ministry and voted in favor of John Wilkes in 1763. For this, Lonsdale had him removed from his seat, and Robert died in obscurity. Robert Lowther (elder)
Robert Lowther (13 December 1681 – September 1745) was an English landowner, holding the estate of Maulds Meaburn, and colonial governor. He was the eldest son of Richard Lowther and Barbara Prickett. He owned the Christchurch Plantation, a slave plantation in Barbados. From 1711 to 1714 and 1715 to 1720, he served as Governor of Barbados. The Privy Council met in Whitehall to hear several complaints against Lowther on 4, 5, 12, 18 and 25 October 1720. At their meeting on the 25th the Council ordered a warrant to be issued for Lowther's arrest for 'Crimes and Misdemeanours Committed by him in the said Island, which were fully proved before Their Excellencies in the council, and several other Complaints having been made to this Board against him, Their Excellencies Judged it incumbent on them to take care that Crimes so Heinous should not Escape the punishment due to them by Law'.''Barbados''. James Lowther, 1st Earl Of Lonsdale
James Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (5 August 173624 May 1802) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons for 27 years from 1757 to 1784, when he was raised to the Peerage of Great Britain as Earl of Lonsdale. Life The son of Robert Lowther of Maulds Meaburn, Westmorland, and Catherine Pennington, he was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He succeeded his father in 1745 to the baronetcy and the estates, including Lowther Hall, owned by his great-uncle Henry Lowther, 3rd Viscount Lonsdale, on 6 March 1751. This inheritance included the Christchurch Plantation, a slave plantation in Barbados. He also inherited the estates of Sir William Lowther, 3rd Baronet, of Marske on 15 April 1756 and the estates of his cousin Sir James Lowther, 4th Baronet, of Whitehaven in 1755. John Wilkes (17 October 1725 – 26 December 1797) was an English Radicalism (historical), radical journalist and politician, as well as a magistrate, essayist and soldier. He was first elected a Member of Parliament in 1757. George Dalston
Sir George Dalston (1581–1657) of Dalston Hall, Cumberland was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England between 1621 and 1643. He supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. Life Dalston was the eldest son of Sir John Dalston, of Dalston Hall, Cumberland and his second wife Frances Warcop, daughter of Thomas Warcop, of Smardale, Westmorland. He matriculated from Queens' College, Cambridge in about 1596. He was knighted on 26 June 1607. He was appointed Captain of Carlisle Castle, Cumberland from 1608 to at least 1643. He served as a Justice of the Peace for Cumberland and Westmorland from 1615 to 1644 and in 1618 was High Sheriff of Cumberland. He was Custos Rotulorum of Cumberland from 1641 to 1644. He was a treasury secretary of obscure origin, characterized by extraordinary diligence, efficiency, persistence, and deep conservatism. Life Born on 15 July 1727, and baptised at St. Lawrence, Appleby, Westmorland, on 14 August 1727, he was the eldest son of Charles Robinson, an Appleby tradesman, who died on 19 June 1760, in his fifty-eighth year, having married, at Kirkby Thore on 19 May 1726, Hannah, daughter of Richard Deane of Appleby. He was educated until 17 at Appleby grammar school, and was then articled to his aunt's husband, Richard Wordsworth, of Sockbridge in Barton, Westmorland, clerk of the peace for the county, and grandfather of the poet William Wordsworth.
