Robert Kerns (baritone)
Robert Kerns (June 8, 1933 – February 15, 1989) was an American baritone, who was born in Detroit and died in Vienna. He was a stylish and versatile singer with a wide repertoire. Life and career Kerns studied at the University of Michigan, and made his debut in 1955 in Toledo, Ohio, as Sharpless in ''Madama Butterfly''. After one year with the New York City Opera, he left for Europe in 1960, where he was engaged at the Zurich Opera where in 1961 he sang Kostandis in the world premiere of Martinů's '' The Greek Passion''. In 1963, he began a long association with the Vienna State Opera, and made his debut at the Royal Opera House in 1964, as ''Billy Budd''. He made his debut at the Paris Opéra in 1973, and became the same year a permanent guest at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Baritone
A baritone is a type of classical music, classical male singing human voice, voice whose vocal range lies between the bass (voice type), bass and the tenor voice type, voice-types. It is the most common male voice. The term originates from the Greek language, Greek (), meaning "low sounding". Composers typically write music for this voice in the range from the second F below C (musical note), middle C to the F above middle C (i.e. Scientific pitch notation, F2–F4) in choral music, and from the second G below middle C to the G above middle C (G2 to G4) in operatic music, but the range can extend at either end. The Salzburg Festival () is a prominent festival of music and drama established in 1920. It is held each summer, for five weeks starting in late July, in Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart's operas are a focus of the festival; one highlight is the annual performance of Hofmannsthal's play ''Jedermann (play), Jedermann'' (''Everyman''). ''Eugene Onegin'' (, ), Op. 24, is an opera (designated as "lyrical scenes") in 3 acts (7 scenes), composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto, organised by the composer himself, very closely follows certain passages in Alexander Pushkin's 1825–1832 novel in verse, retaining much of his poetry. Tchaikovsky's friend Konstantin Shilovsky contributed M. Triquet's verses in Act 2, Scene 1, while Tchaikovsky himself arranged the text for Lensky's arioso in Act 1, Scene 1, and almost all of Prince Gremin's aria in Act 3, Scene 1.
