Robert Holt (politician)
Robert Wilfred Holt (9 June 1913 – 1 May 1985) was an Australian politician, a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly and, later, of the Parliament of Australia. Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Holt was educated in Melbourne at Scotch College and the University of Melbourne. He became a barrister in 1940. In 1945, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Portland. He was defeated in 1947, but re-elected in 1950. He was Minister for Lands and Social Settlement from 1952 to 1953, in the government of John Cain (Senior). In 1955, Holt transferred to federal politics, winning the Australian House of Representatives seat of Darebin. Just three years later, in 1958, he retired from politics due to ill health. He was elected president of the Victorian branch of the Labor Party in 1962, but lost the presidency three years later, after criticising the branch and its poor electoral performance. Division Of Darebin
The Division of Darebin was an Divisions of the Australian House of Representatives, Australian Electoral Division in Victoria (Australia), Victoria. The division was created in 1949, and was named for the Darebin Creek. It was a fairly safe seat for the Australian Labor Party. The division was located in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, initially including Preston, Victoria, Preston, Reservoir, Victoria, Reservoir, Thornbury, Victoria, Thornbury and what was later Kingsbury, Victoria, Kingsbury. It replaced the northern two-thirds of Division of Batman, with the exception of the area that would later became La Trobe University. During its 20 years of existence, the division only had one boundary change in 1955, when it was expanded eastwards to gain the Heidelberg, Victoria, Heidelberg area from the Division of Deakin and losing Thornbury to the Division of Batman. The Board of Land and Works was a government authority in Victoria, Australia. It was established by an act of parliament in 1857, with the aim of consolidating and coordinating the administration of public lands and public works. Consequently, the two positions of Commissioner of Public Works and Surveyor General or Commissioner of Crown Lands and Survey were abolished. Throughout its existence, the Board of Land and Works was responsible for matters involving public works and public lands.
