Robert George Thomas
Robert George Thomas (16 February 1820 – 14 April 1883) was a draftsman and architect in the British colony of South Australia. He copied Surveyor-General Colonel William Light's original plan for the City of Adelaide and was later responsible for the design and execution of some of its significant buildings, including several churches in a Gothic style. History Thomas was the eldest son of newspaperman Robert Thomas, and was articled as a draftsman to George Strickland Kingston, who was appointed by the Colonization Commissioners for South Australia to accompany Colonel William Light to South Australia. Light's brief was to select and survey a site for the city of Adelaide, and survey it ready for sale to speculators and prospective residents. General Post Office, a colonial-era building situated on 141 King William Street on the north-west corner of King William Street and Victoria Square, is the former General Post Office for South Australia, Australia, Postal services operated from the building between 6 May 1872 and 11 October 2019. Construction The original building was constructed in the period 1867–1872, and was the most expensive building constructed to that time by the colonial government in South Australia. Prince Alfred, The Duke of Edinburgh, was involved in laying the foundation stone. It is associated with several architects of note, including Edmund Wright, Edward John Woods, Edward Angus Hamilton and Robert G. Parkside Lunatic Asylum
Glenside Hospital, as it was known from 1967, previously the Public Colonial Lunatic Asylum of South Australia, Parkside Lunatic Asylum and Parkside Mental Hospital, was a complex of buildings used as a psychiatric hospital in Glenside, South Australia. Since the 1970s the original site has been subdivided and parcels of land sold off, largely for housing. The large administration building fronting the side was refurbished to house the Adelaide Studios of the South Australian Film Corporation in 2011. William Hanson (engineer)
William Hanson MICE (1810 – 14 July 1875) was a government engineer in the early days of the colony of South Australia. Early days Hanson was born in London, a son of Benjamin Hanson, fruit merchant and importer. William was trained as an architect, and spent some time in a builder's office, then in 1836 began working for George Stephenson. He subsequently became manager of two English railways. Career in South Australia He arrived in South Australia in late 1853. In February 1855 he was appointed engineer to the Adelaide and Gawler Railway Commissions, overseeing the construction of the line to Gawler and its extension to Kapunda (completed 1860), also to the Adelaide and Port Adelaide Railway.
