Robert Francis is a British politician and businessman who has served as Chairman of the Council of the Isles of Scilly since 2018. He, along with his wife Teresa, have owned the Star Castle hotel since 2003 and the Holy Vale vineyard since 2009. Previous to this, he built a hotel on St Martin's which opened in 1989, and ran the Polurrian Hotel in Mullion, on the Lizard Peninsular. Council Of The Isles Of Scilly
The Council of the Isles of Scilly is a '' sui generis'' unitary local government authority covering the Isles of Scilly off the west coast of Cornwall. It is currently made up of 16 seats, with all councillors being independents. The council was created in 1890 as the Isles of Scilly Rural District Council and was renamed in 1974. History Historically, the Isles of Scilly were administered as one of the hundreds of Cornwall, although the Cornwall quarter sessions had limited jurisdiction there. Star Castle, Isles Of Scilly
Star Castle is a fortress on St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, built in 1593 by Robert Adams, Surveyor of the Royal Works (d.1595) and Francis Godolphin, Captain of the Scilly Isles, during the "Spanish invasion scare." Description The Star Castle is in the shape of an eight-pointed star and features on the flag of the Council of the Isles of Scilly. Holy Vale ( kw, Hal an Val) is a minor valley and small settlement within, on the island of St Mary's, the largest of the Isles of Scilly, England. St Martin's ( kw, Brechiek, meaning "dappled island") is the northernmost populated island of the Isles of Scilly, England. It has an area of . Description There are three main settlements on the island - Higher Town, Middle Town and Lower Town - in addition to a number of scattered farms and cottages, with a total population (2011 census) of 136. 2017 Council Of The Isles Of Scilly Election
The 2017 Council of the Isles of Scilly election took place on 4 May 2017 as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. The council is a ''sui generis'' unitary authority within the ceremonial county of Cornwall. The whole council of 16 members was be up for election, with twelve members elected in the St Mary's electoral division and another four from the 'Off Islands'; one each from Bryher, St Martin's, St Agnes and Tresco. The total number of councillors was being reduced from 21, with each island electing one councillor fewer than previously. Candidates 22 candidates stood for election, with all candidates standing independently of any political party. Since only one candidate stood for each off island they were elected unopposed. 18 candidates stood for the remaining 12 seats on St Mary's. St Mary's ( kw, Ennor, meaning ''The Mainland'') is the largest and most populous island of the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago off the southwest coast of Cornwall in England. 2021 Council Of The Isles Of Scilly Election
Elections to the Council of the Isles of Scilly took place on 6 May 2021, alongside other United Kingdom local elections. All 16 seats on the council were up for election. There are 12 councillors for St Mary’s and 1 each of the other inhabited isles of Bryher, St Agnes, St Martin’s and Tresco. Ward results No persons were nominated for Bryher. Consequently the Returning Officer is required to order an election to fill the vacancy on a day appointed by them before Friday 25 June. A notice of election will be issued in due course but not until after the May elections have passed.
