Robert Were Fox The Elder
Robert Were Fox (5 July 1754 – 1818) was a Quaker businessman who lived in Falmouth. Life and work Fox was born in Fowey, Cornwall, in the United Kingdom, and married Elizabeth Tregelles (1768–1849) in 1788. The couple had six sons, including Charles Fox of Trebah, Robert Were Fox FRS of Penjerrick Garden and Alfred Fox of Glendurgan. They also had two daughters: Mariana Fox (1807–1863), who married Francis Tuckett of Frenchay and became the mother of the mountaineer Francis Fox Tuckett, and Charlotte, born in 1799, who married Samuel Fox of Tottenham. The Fox family were Quakers, descended from George Fox of Fowey and his wife, Anna Debell. Robert Were Fox was the son of George Croker Fox and his wife, Mary Were. It was George Croker Fox founded a Falmouth ship-brokering business that continued into the 21st century. Robert Were Fox The Younger
Robert Were Fox FRS (26 April 1789 – 25 July 1877) was a British geologist, natural philosopher and inventor. He is known mainly for his work on the temperature of the Earth and his construction of a compass to measure magnetic dip at sea. Life and family Fox was born on 26 April 1789 at Falmouth, England, the eldest son of Robert Were Fox (1754–1818) and his wife, Elizabeth Tregelles. He had nine siblings. The Fox family were members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and were descended from members who had long settled in Cornwall, although they were not related to George Fox who had introduced the community into the county. In 1814, Fox the Younger married Maria Barclay (1785–1858), daughter of Robert and Rachel Barclay of Bury Hill, near Dorking, Surrey. Robert Fox (antiquarian)
Robert Fox (2 March 1798, Godmanchester, England – 7 June 1843, Godmanchester) was an English antiquarian. Life He was the second surviving son of John Fox (1748-1817), cabinet maker and upholsterer, of Huntingdon, and second wife, Frances Maples (1760-1845). Fox was admitted a member of the Royal College of Surgeons on 5 March 1819, and practised in Huntingdon and the neighbourhood. He was the founder of the Literary and Scientific Institution of Huntingdon in 1841, and was himself an able lecturer on subjects connected with antiquities, geology, natural history, and philosophy. His only publication, ''The History of Godmanchester, in the county of Huntingdon'', 8vo, London, 1831, one of the best of its class, gained him admission to the Society of Antiquaries. Robert Barclay Fox (24 July 1873 – 22 April 1934) was a Falmouth businessman and Conservative Party politician in Cornwall. He was known as Barclay Fox. Fox was born the son of Robert Fox (1845–1915) and his wife Ellen Mary Bassett. He was the grandson of another "Robert Barclay Fox" (1817–1855) and was also known as Barclay Fox, one of the influential local Quaker family of Fox, of Falmouth, Cornwall. Robert Fox (c. 1846–1933) was an African-American activist who sparked a civil rights battle in Louisville, Kentucky in October 1870 by entering a segregated streetcar. He was born in Kentucky to Albert and Margaret Fox and worked as an undertaker and a grocer. He died in 1933. Robert Bradford Fox
Robert Bradford Fox (1918–1985) was an anthropologist and leading historian on pre-Hispanic Philippines. In 1958, Fox led a National Museum team in conducting extensive excavations on two sites at Calatagan, Batangas, in what may be considered the first systematic excavation involving the National Museum in the country. His report, published in 1959, was based on artifacts and information derived from 505 graves in two sites known as Kay Tomas and Pulong Bakaw. In the 1960s, by then the head of the Anthropology Division of the National Museum of the Philippines, he led a six-year archaeological research project in Palawan, focusing mainly on the caves and rockshelters of Lipuun Point in the southern part of the island. Its most outstanding site is the Tabon Cave complex, the large main cave delivered the only Pleistocene human fossils found in the Philippines to date. Robert Fox (born 2 November 1931) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He is interested in the history of sciences and technology in Europe from the 18th century onwards. He has published extensively.
