Robert Fowler (Australian Politician)
Robert Fowler (13 July 1840 – 12 June 1906) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to pottery manufacturer Enoch Fowler and Jane Lucas. After attending Christ Church School, he worked in his father's pottery business, becoming a partner when his father died in 1879. On 2 October 1867 he married Jane Seale, with whom he had eight children. Closely involved in local government, he served on Cook Municipal Council (1869–70, mayor 1870), Camperdown Municipal Council (1870–71, mayor 1870–71) and Sydney City Council (1872–87, 1890–1901, mayor 1880). In 1894 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Free Trade member for Sydney-Phillip. Colony Of New South Wales People
A colony is a territory subject to a form of foreign rule, which rules the territory and its indigenous peoples separated from the foreign rulers, the colonizer, and their '' metropole'' (or "mother country"). This separated rule was often organized into colonial empires, with their metropoles at their centers, making colonies neither annexed or even integrated territories, nor client states. Particularly new imperialism and its colonialism advanced this separated rule and its lasting coloniality. Colonies were most often set up and colonized for exploitation and possibly settlement by colonists. The term colony originates from the ancient Roman , a type of Roman settlement. Derived from ''colonus'' (farmer, cultivator, planter, or settler), it carries with it the sense of 'farm' and 'landed estate'. Richard Meagher
Richard Denis Meagher (11 January 1866 – 17 September 1931) was an Australian solicitor and was the first Labor Lord Mayor of Sydney, serving from 1916 to 1917. Early life Meagher was born in Bathurst, New South Wales and educated at St Stanislaus' College, Bathurst and St Aloysius' College, Sydney. He became an articled clerk to the solicitor J. A. B. Cahill in 1883 and Paddy Crick in 1887. In January 1891, he married Alice Maude Osmond. He became Crick's partner in 1892 and mainly practiced in the police court. Meagher unsuccessfully defended George Dean of attempted murder, but persuaded two out of three royal commissioners in a subsequent inquiry to find that the conviction was unsafe and, as a result, Dean was pardoned. Political career On the strength of Meagher's defence of Dean, he was elected as the member for Sydney-Phillip in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in July 1895. John Harris (New South Wales Politician)
John Harris (10 August 18387 November 1911) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Maghera in County Londonderry to John Harris and Nancy Ann McKee. His family migrated to Sydney in 1842. He attended the University of Sydney, but left before graduating to manage the property he had inherited from his father. In 1869 he married Lizzie Henrietta Dingle Page; they had eight children. He was a City of Sydney, Sydney City Councillor from 1873 to 1883, from 1885 to 1900 and from 1902 to 1911, serving as Mayor of Sydney, Mayor from 1881 to 1883 and from 1888 to 1889, known for reforming the council and with a reputation for honesty. Charles James Roberts
Charles James Roberts , (29 March 1846 – 14 August 1925) was a publican and politician in colonial New South Wales and Postmaster-General of New South Wales. Roberts was the eldest son of Charles Warman Roberts, a publican of Sydney, New South Wales, and his wife Annie, ''née'' Marsden and educated at St James's Grammar School and Sydney Grammar School under William Stephens. Roberts went into business, becoming a licensed victualler. Roberts married in 1867 Lucretia, daughter of Abraham Abraham, of Sydney. Also in 1867 Roberts purchased the Crown and Anchor Hotel from his father, located on the corner of George Street, Sydney, George and Market Street, Sydney, Market streets.
