Robert Fletcher (costume Designer)
Robert Fletcher (August 23, 1922 – April 5, 2021) was an American costume and set designer. He was best known for designing costumes for major ballet and opera companies in addition to films, television specials, and New York stage plays. Personal life Fletcher was born in August 1922 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His father was actor Leon Ames. As of 2018, Fletcher lived in Kansas City, Missouri with his husband Broadway dancer Jack Kauflin. He died there in April 2021 at the age of 98. Kauflin predeceased him. Career After the semester in Iowa, Fletcher moved to New York City and worked as an actor, appearing in Ethel Barrymore's last show, ''Embezzled Heaven''. He lived in a cold-water flat with artist Ruth Russell. ''High Spirits'' is a musical with a book, lyrics, and music by Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray, based on the play '' Blithe Spirit'' by Noël Coward, about a man coping with the ghost of his dead wife. Martin and Gray adhered closely to Coward's original text, while expanding the medium's character to the star role, initially calling the show ''Faster Than Sound''. The playwright was delighted with their adaptation and agreed to direct it himself. Productions The musical opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre on April 7, 1964, and closed on February 27, 1965, after 375 performances and 14 previews. ''Little Me'' is a musical written by Neil Simon, with music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Carolyn Leigh. The original 1962 Broadway production featured Sid Caesar in multiple roles with multiple stage accents, playing all of the heroine's husbands and lovers. One of the better-known songs from the musical is " I've Got Your Number". Background The musical ''Little Me'' is based on the novel by Patrick Dennis titled '' Little Me: The Intimate Memoirs of that Great Star of Stage, Screen and Television/Belle Poitrine'', an illustrated autobiography of an imaginary diva (published in 1961). Tony Award
The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, more commonly known as a Tony Award, recognizes excellence in live Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in Manhattan. The ceremony is usually held in June. The awards are given for Broadway productions and performances. One is also given for regional theatre. Several discretionary non-competitive awards are given as well, including a Special Tony Award, the Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre, and the Isabelle Stevenson Award. Theatre Development Fund
The Theatre Development Fund (TDF) is a not-for-profit performing arts service organization in New York City. Created in 1968 to help an ailing New York theatre industry, TDF supports audiences and artists through a variety of programs. Initially, TDF supported performances it deemed to be of cultural value on Broadway and beyond through its subsidy program. While this program was discontinued, TDF continues to support Broadway theatre, Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-off-Broadway, Off-off-broadway theatre and dance productions by selling tickets through multiple programs, the most prominent being its TKTS, TKTS discount ticket booths. The organization also assists Broadway with complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), provides educational outreach programs to secondary and college students, and rents out costumes to productions and other non-profits.
