Robert Ellice (fur Trader)
General Robert Ellice (13 October 1784 – 18 June 1856) was a British Army officer. Military career Born the son of Scottish merchant and fur trader Alexander Ellice and brother of Edward Ellice and Alexander Ellice, Ellice was commissioned as an ensign on 8 November 1798. He saw action at Buenos Aires in 1807 before becoming Deputy Adjutant-General in Canada in 1809. He went on to be General Officer Commanding Western District in 1840 and General Officer Commanding the British troops in Malta in 1847. He was also colonel of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. James Frederick Lyon
Lieutenant-General Sir James Frederick Lyon (1775 – 16 October 1842) was a British army officer and colonial administrator who served as the governor of Barbados from 1829 to 1833. Biography James Frederick Lyon was a descendant of the Lyons family, from whom the Lords Glamis were also descended. James Frederick was son of Captain James Lyon, of the 35th Regiment of Foot, and his wife, who was the daughter of James Hamilton. James Frederick was born in 1775, on board a transport-ship that was homeward bound from America, subsequent to the Battle of Bunker's Hill, at which his father was killed. On 4 August 1791, James Frederick was appointed an ensign to the 25th Regiment of Foot. As the younger son of an earl, he is sometimes styled "the Honourable". Lieutenant-General Sir Willoughby Cotton (1783 – 4 May 1860) was an English soldier in the British Army. Family Willoughby Cotton was born in 1783, to Vice-Admiral Rowland Cotton and Elizabeth Aston. They also had a daughter, Sydney Arabella Cotton. Rowland Cotton was from a well-established Chester family, was the second son of Sir Lynch Cotton, 4th Baronet, while Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Sir Willoughby Aston, 5th Baronet Aston, of Aston, Chester. Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Marquess of Hertford (5 July 1718 – 14 June 1794) of Ragley Hall, Arrow, in Warwickshire, was a British courtier and politician who, briefly, was Viceroy of Ireland where he had substantial estates. Background Hertford was born in Chelsea, London, the son of Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Baron Conway and Charlotte Shorter, daughter of John Shorter of Bybrook. Battle Of Beauharnois
The Battle of Beauharnois was fought on November 10, 1838, between Lower Canada loyalists and Patriote rebels, after 500 armed men had converged on Beauharnois, on November 3–4, overtaking the seigneurial manor. The seigneury of Beauharnois belonged to the Ellice family, having, in 1796, purchased it from Michel Chartier de Lotbinière, Marquis de Lotbinière. Edward Ellice, private secretary to John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, had then been in residence for several months. He, and, separately, his wife, Lady Jane Ellice, and her sister, Eglantine "Tina" Balfour, later Ellice, were taken prisoner, along with a number of others. Ellice's watercolours, sketches and diary survived, and record that they were unharmed. The town rose up, following a series of raids by rebel leaders who had escaped into the United States.
