Robert E. Davis (judge)
Robert E. Davis (August 28, 1939 – August 4, 2010) was the Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from 2009 to 2010. He was first appointed in 1993 and became chief justice on January 12, 2009. Personal life Davis was born in 1939 in Topeka, Kansas. He graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1961. While there he was President of the Arts Council. He then attended Georgetown University Law Center where he was a member of the ''Georgetown Law Journal''. He earned his LL.B. from Georgetown in 1964. Professional life Davis began his career as a member of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps where he served as trial counsel in the Republic of Korea and as government appellate counsel in Washington D.C. from 1964 to 1967. Kay McFarland
Kay McFarland (July 20, 1935 – August 18, 2015) was a chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court. She was the first female elected to a judgeship in Shawnee County, Kansas, first appointed to the state supreme court, and first to hold the title of chief justice. Personal life Kay McFarland was born on July 20, 1935, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Dr. Kenneth and Margaret McFarland. In 1957, she graduated magna cum laude from Washburn University in Topeka with dual majors in English and history-political science. She graduated from Washburn University School of Law in 1964. McFarland died on August 18, 2015. Professional life McFarland was admitted to the Kansas Bar and entered into private practice in 1964 in Topeka. In 1971, she was elected judge of the probate and juvenile courts of Shawnee County, becoming the first woman elected to a judgeship in that county. Nancy Louise Moritz (born March 3, 1960) is a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and former Associate Justice on the Kansas Supreme Court. Biography Moritz (formerly Caplinger) was born in Beloit, Kansas. She grew up in Tipton, Kansas, before her family moved to Salina, Kansas, when Moritz was 15 years old. She graduated valedictorian of her class from Sacred Heart High School in Salina. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Washburn University in 1982 and her Juris Doctor from Washburn Law School in 1985. She has two daughters. Lawton R. Nuss (born December 30, 1952) is a former Kansas Supreme Court justice appointed by Governor Bill Graves in August 2002. By virtue of tenure, he became chief justice upon Robert E. Davis's resignation. Nuss announced his decision to retire, effective December 17, 2019. Personal life Lawton R. Nuss was born in Salina, Kansas in 1952.
