Robert Don Oliver
Vice-Admiral Robert Don Oliver (17 March 1895 – 6 October 1980) was a Royal Navy officer who was appointed Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff. Naval career Oliver served in World War I taking part in the Battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914, fighting at Gallipoli in 1915 and then undertaking mine-laying off the German and Belgian coast. Promoted to captain, he was given command of HMS ''Iron Duke'' in 1939. He also served in World War II and was commanding HMS ''Devonshire'', a heavy cruiser, on 21 November 1941, when he was informed that codebreakers had determined that German U-boats were going to be surfacing near him, to refuel from a merchant raider, the Hilfskreuzer (cruiser) ''Atlantis''. Using the intelligence, ''Devonshire'' sunk ''Atlantis''. He later commanded the gunnery school HMS ''Excellent'' and then the cruiser . Vice-admiral (Royal Navy)
A vice-admiral (VAdm) is a flag officer rank of the Royal Navy and equates to the NATO rank code OF-8. It is immediately superior to the Rear admiral (Royal Navy), rear admiral rank and is subordinate to the Admiral (Royal Navy), full admiral rank. The equivalent rank in the British Army and Royal Marines is Lieutenant-general (United Kingdom), lieutenant-general; and in the Royal Air Force, it is air marshal. Merchant Raider
Merchant raiders are armed commerce raiding ships that disguise themselves as non-combatant merchant vessels. History Germany used several merchant raiders early in World War I (1914–1918), and again early in World War II (1939–1945). The captain of a German merchant raider, Felix von Luckner, used the sailing ship SMS ''Seeadler'' for his voyage (1916–1917). The Germans used a sailing ship at this stage of the war because coal-fired ships had limited access to fuel outside of territories held by the Central Powers due to international regulations concerning refueling of combat ships in neutral countries. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by King George I of Great Britain, George I on 18 May 1725. Edward Evans-Lombe
Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Malcolm Evans-Lombe KCB (15 October 1901 – 14 May 1974) was a Royal Navy officer who became Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff. Naval career Educated at West Downs School and in the Royal Navy, Evans-Lombe served in the Second World War initially as Naval Assistant to the Third Sea Lord and then, from 1942, as Captain of the cruiser HMS ''Glasgow''. He was appointed Director of the Gunnery and Anti-Aircraft Warfare Division at the Admiralty in December 1943, Chief of Staff for the Eastern Fleet in June 1944 and Chief of Staff for the British Pacific Fleet in December 1944. He became Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff in 1950 and retired in 1955.
